On 25 November 1960, the Mirabal sisters, also known as “Mariposas”, were three Dominican sisters who opposed the dictatorship and were brutally murdered for being activists and women.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly named and adopted an agreement on the Elimination of Violence against Women, which defines violence against women as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.” Naturally, in 1999 the General Assembly proclaimed 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Renacer Violeta, born at the end of 2012, soon managed to provide answers to the needs and support of women victims of gender violence, including their children.
