The Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have celebrated today, Thursday, June 16, the final event of the ninth edition of Ciberlandia, a meeting aimed at awakening curiosity and scientific vocation in young people.

The event took place at the Insular Youth Center and made schoolchildren aware of how robotics can help in evacuation plans for the population in cases of emergency. In this case, a case of volcanic eruption was simulated.

The councilor for New Technologies of the Cabildo, Jonathan Gil, was present, as well as the second vice president, Claudio Gutiérrez, the councilor for Education and Youth, María Saavedra, and the councilor for Equality and Social Policies, Adargoma Hernández. The director of the Institute of Cybernetics, Alexis Quesada, and the director of the School of Computer Engineering of the ULPGC, Francisca Quintana, also participated in the event.

Jonathan Gil thanked “the participation of all the centers that have been part of a new edition of an event that seeks to arouse the curiosity of young people in this field and that a future programmer emerges from here”. He expressed the predisposition of the Cabildo to continue taking this activity to schoolchildren.

In addition, Quesada wished the young people “to have spent a different day, learning and having fun at the same time.” He also thanked the Cabildo for joining Ciberlandia from the first edition and the teachers “for motivating schoolchildren to participate.” For his part, Quintana congratulated the boys and girls for their work.

A total of 270 primary and secondary school students from nine educational centers on the Island participated in the workshops of the ninth edition of Ciberlandia. Robotics has been the main protagonist of the workshops that took place last May in a meeting that was attended by educational centers IES Jandía, CEIP La Hubara, CEIP Tuineje, CEIP Francisca Pérez, IES Corralejo, CEIP Villaverde, IES Gran Tarajal, CEIP La Oliva and IES Puerto Cabras Rafael Báez.

More than 2,000 primary and secondary school children from Fuerteventura have participated during its nine editions, thanks to the collaborating companies. In this edition, the theme chosen has been robotics in emergency situations.
