World Surfing Day Special

Protest Surf school is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. For the International World Surfing Day celebrated globally on 20th June, the owner Saffie gave an exclusive interview to Fuerteventura Times, speaking about why Fuerteventura is the perfect destination to start surfing and what he enjoys most about it.

Originally from Belgium, Saffie came to the island of eternal sunshine mainly for the waves that enter the island’s coastline every day from different directions. As Fuerteventura is an island and the waves hit from different directions, you can choose from diverse spots with excellent surfing conditions almost every day, so it’s the ideal year-round destination for surfers. Saffie especially points out that the conditions are excellent for everyone at any level and encourages beginners to give this unique sport a try.

“Especially now in the times we are living, I think surfing is absolute freedom. You are one with nature, and you are in the ocean with nobody around you and no problems,” says Saffie, owner, Protest Surf School Fuerteventura.

Most of us notice the modern day-to-day problems: stress, anxiety, or harmful and destructive thoughts are issues people around the globe have to deal with. According to SurferToday, surfing has already been prescribed by doctors as it is proven to improve mental health. It is declared as a “Medicine for the mind.” Research by Ryan Pittsinger, a doctoral student at the University of Iowa, indicated that riding waves increases positive feelings and diminish negative ones.

As surfing has become a trendy lifestyle over the years, more and more people want to experience it for themselves. Saffie said that he barely met people who just tried it for only one day – the surfing-energy is so contagious that travelers want to try over and over again. In his experience, a five-day-course leads to the highest results for people who want to try surfing for the very first time.

If you are a beginner, Saffie recommends coming to Fuerteventura for surfing in May and June because the waves are perfect, and as it is still low-season, surf schools teach in smaller groups which can help with emphasized personal training. If you are an intermediate and professional surfer, he recommends the best time to visit Fuerteventura for surfing is from September to mid- January.

The island offers the best conditions: with around 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and an average temperature of 28 degrees in summer, Fuerteventura is the ideal spot to start surfing, practice surfing and take the crazy waves like a pro.
