Winning Tip: Epic Sunsets, Fuerteventura
We recently escaped to the north-west coast of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands for a rejuvenating week before Christmas. Flights were surprisingly affordable, starting at just £80, and we found reasonable car hire available for £50. Our cozy Airbnb in Lajares was an absolute steal at £30 a night. Moving eastward, the village of Agua Amarga, 62km from Almeria in southeastern Spain, is a hidden gem. Nestled among cubist white houses and under the brilliant Tabernas desert sky, the place is positively charming, especially in January when temperatures hover above 20°C. The coastline here is rugged and mostly undeveloped, offering stunning contrasts of a mirror-like sea against the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains.

Murcia, known as the warmest part of Spain, has become a personal favorite for winter sun, even in the often-overcast month of February. A standout budget-friendly option in the city is Pension Segura, where doubles start at merely €42 B&B.
The city itself is rich with fascinating architecture, quaint squares filled with street cafes, and intriguing museums. Vegetarians will delight in discovering Mana, an excellent all-vegetarian restaurant. A short bus ride can usher you to the Fuensanta and the hills of Carascoy for quality hiking and stunning views, while trains are available for day trips to nearby towns like Lorca and Cartagena.
Life’s a Breeze, Tarifa
Laid-back Tarifa, located at the southern tip of Europe, is known for its near-constant winter sunshine. This idyllic town lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, becoming a haven for kite-surfing. It boasts beautiful sandy beaches, chic bars, and a plethora of affordable dining options.
Low-cost flights to Gibraltar from the UK contribute to a hassle-free travel experience, complemented by the lively atmosphere of hostels, like La Cocatera, where dorm beds start from £13. Here, you can mingle with like-minded travelers while enjoying the town’s vibrant coastal vibes.
Capital Idea, Tenerife
Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, enchants visitors with stunning panoramic views that encompass the city, the sea, and majestic mountains. Affordable Airbnb apartments can be found for around £70 a night, making it a budget-friendly option for travelers.
Make sure not to miss the local community produce market, La Recova, alongside a rich selection of bars and restaurants that serve hearty, delicious meals. Public transportation is very accessible and affordable—just €1.30 for a tram ride takes you to the historic town of La Laguna. Don’t forget to check out the ecological marvel that is Palmetum Park, an oasis created from a former rubbish tip.

For those looking to explore, La Gomera presents an unforgettable hiking experience. The island’s picturesque, hilly terrain is dotted with an extensive network of well-marked footpaths, making it an ideal destination for both novice and seasoned hikers.

For a different experience, consider escaping to The Gambia. My friend and I decided to skip the standardized package deals and opted for the tranquil Nemasu Ecolodge, situated right on the beach near the peaceful village of Gunjur.
With basic yet clean cabins, the untouched beach was shaded by forest, providing a serene backdrop for relaxation. A short walk led us to lively fishing boats unloading the day’s catch, where we bought a couple of fresh fish that were then cooked for us in the local style at beachside shacks. Heading to Cape Town in South Africa offers incredible value, especially during the gentle winds and sunny days of January through March. With overnight flights, you can maximize your time while minimizing accommodation costs. The festive crowds start to dissipate after Christmas, making it easier to indulge in the local lifestyle at affordable prices—think £1 for a pint and £10 for a delicious meal.
Hostels like A Sunflower Stop near Green Point beaches offer fantastic amenities, with dorm beds starting at £13 a night and doubles from £39. This travel experience allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy the breathtaking coastal scenery without breaking the bank.
Not Just for Divers, Red Sea
The Marsa Shagra eco-lodge, located near Marsa Alam on Egypt’s stunning Red Sea coast, is perfect for those looking for a relaxing getaway. While great for diving and snorkeling adventurers, it also caters perfectly to those who wish to unwind amidst beautiful surroundings.
Accommodations consist of well-equipped tents just a few meters from the shoreline, allowing you to awaken to soothing ocean waves. Rates in January and February start at €45 per person per night for two people sharing, which includes three meals a day—an incredible deal for such a picturesque setting.
Morocco Bound, On a Family Trip
Our recent family trip to Marrakech was nothing short of magical, with temperatures around 24°C welcoming us into the New Year. We enjoyed an array of activities, including visits to a local spa and adventurous hikes through the Atlas Mountains, where we explored stunning waterfalls cascading down from the snowmelt.
Although daytime temperatures called for light clothing, the evenings turned cool enough for jackets. Convenient train routes from Marrakech to Casablanca allow for easy day trips at just £12 per person return in first class. We chose to stay at the Opera Plaza, located in Guilez, for a comfortable yet affordable B&B experience, with doubles priced at £83.
