1,425 Euros: The Highest Bid at the FEAGA 2024 Stallion Auction

The XXXVI Edition of the Fuerteventura Agricultural, Livestock, and Fishing Fair

Every year, the Feria Agrícola, Ganadera y Pesquera de Fuerteventura (FEAGA) serves as a vibrant hub for agricultural advancements and livestock showcasing. This year’s event, now in its 36th edition, took place over the weekend, attracting numerous participants and spectators alike. One of the highlights was undoubtedly the auction of male goats, an essential feature that draws together local farmers, breeders, and enthusiasts eager to enhance the genetic diversity of their herds.

The Excitement of the Auction

During this year’s goat auction, a total of twenty male specimens were presented for bidding. Among them, a striking male goat known as the morisco negro stood out, fetching the highest bid of €1,425. This impressive specimen, from the livestock of Esteban Rodríguez of Lajares, quickly became a centerpiece of the event, showcasing the local breeders’ dedication to quality and standards.

Following closely in popularity, the second-highest bid was recorded at €1,200 for a goat from Jennifer Pérez Cabrera’s collection in Las Parcelas. This notable goat was acquired by Esteban Rodríguez, demonstrating the competitive spirit prevalent among breeders at the fair. Additionally, a third bid of €650 went to another goat from Jennifer Pérez’s livestock, claimed by Julio Alberto Barrios from La Oliva. These competitive auctions highlight not only the quality of livestock present but also the acute interest in improving goat genetics among local farmers.

A Gathering of Passionate Breeders

The event has been organized by the Asociación de Criadores de Cabra de Fuerteventura, reflecting a strong commitment to the promotion and preservation of the Majorera goat breed. Each year, FEAGA provides a unique opportunity for farmers and breeders to convene, share knowledge, and strengthen community ties centered around their shared passion. This community spirit is palpable throughout the fair, as seasoned breeders mentor newcomers and all participants come together to celebrate agricultural heritage.

In this edition, the venue featured a newly renovated ring capable of accommodating 300 spectators, ensuring that the excitement of the auction could be enjoyed by a larger audience. Such upgrades not only enhance the experience for attendees but also underscore the commitment to continuously improving the fair’s offerings and facilities.

A Focus on Genetic Improvement

One of the main goals of the auction is to promote advancements in genetic quality among Majorera goats. By gathering such a diverse group of livestock in one place, breeders gain access to a variety of genetic options that can lead to healthier, more productive herds. The interest in goat farming in Fuerteventura is not merely about trade; it combines elements of tradition, sustainability, and innovation that resonate with the broader goals of agricultural development.

Both seasoned raisers and newly interested individuals are invited to learn from one another, share practices, and explore the latest developments in caprine genetics. Workshops and informational sessions often accompany such events, providing essential insights into best practices in breeding, care, and sustainability.

Engaging with the Community

FEAGA is much more than an auction; it is a cultural celebration that features various elements of local life, including gastronomy, crafting, and traditional music. This blend of practical industry focus with cultural festivities ensures that visitors leave with a richer understanding of Fuerteventura’s agricultural landscape and community values.

The contributions of local farmers and the emphasis on quality livestock make the Feria an essential aspect of the island’s heritage. Whether you are a seasoned farmer or just someone curious about Fuerteventura’s agricultural sector, the FEAGA not only showcases the region’s best but also fosters a sense of belonging among diverse participants.

Through dynamic interactions, strong community bonds, and enthusiasm for agricultural progress, this event continues to thrive as a beloved forum for all involved. Each edition acts as a vibrant reminder of the deep-rooted relationships that bind the island’s agricultural community together, making it a must-see event for anyone visiting Fuerteventura.
