Fuerteventura’s Investment in Sports: A New Era of Support

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura has made a significant move to promote sports and healthy living on the island. An impressive sum of €3,076,002.82 has been allocated in grants earmarked for various local entities, including sports organizations, individual athletes, and community events. This initiative aims to effectively enhance physical activity and encourage healthy lifestyle habits among the residents of Fuerteventura. Notably, the 2024 Sports Grants Call has been officially opened for applications.

Increased Financial Commitment

Luis Gonzáles, the island’s Sports Councilor, announced that the funding for these grants represents an increase of nearly €1 million from the previous year. This marks a historic investment in sports on the island, with González emphasizing the reach of this funding: “The Cabildo will invest more than ever in island sports, and this financing will cover aspects and reach entities that have not been addressed before,” he stated.

New Avenues of Support

For the first time, the grants have introduced targeted funding to improve sports facilities and facilitate the purchase of sports equipment. This new approach recognizes the importance of both physical spaces and necessary gear in fostering an environment where sports can thrive.

Application Timeline

Interested parties have a generous timeline for application submission, open from February 20 to March 4. This nearly month-long window allows individuals and organizations ample time to prepare and present their proposals, ensuring that a wide range of potential beneficiaries can participate.

Categories of Beneficiaries

The grants will be distributed through a competitive process, with various categories identified as beneficiaries:

  • Municipalities and Community Councils of Fuerteventura
  • Sports Entities
  • Individual Athletes with Independent Licenses
  • Sporting Events
  • Island and Canary Sports Federations with Delegations in Fuerteventura
  • Special Attention Sports Organizations
  • Non-Sports Associations, Foundations, and Entities based in Fuerteventura
  • Elite and High-Performance Athletes

This diversified approach ensures inclusivity and aims to enhance sports participation at multiple levels throughout the community.

Focus Areas of Funding

Historically, the primary aim of the grants has been to promote sports (Line 1). This funding assists with operational expenses across various categories. It covers programs, projects, or events intended to foster physical, recreational, and educational activities aimed at improving physical, psychological, and emotional well-being while also facilitating competition success and promoting active leisure habits. The total allocation for this line stands at €2,620,000.00.

New Grant Lines Explained

Two new grant lines have been introduced:

  • Line 2 is aimed at municipalities and community councils, focused on financing necessary construction and services for sports facilities.
  • Line 3 is available to all categories, targeting the purchase of sports equipment and complementary goods for sporting activities. Combined, these two lines account for €456,002.82 of the total funding.

Application Process

Interested individuals and entities wishing to engage with the Cabildo electronically must submit their applications along with the required documentation via the electronic registration platform or in person at any official registration office for individuals.
