Educational Exchange in Puerto del Rosario: A Fusion of Cultures and Knowledge
This week, the Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario has become a vibrant hub of cultural exchange, as it welcomes two groups of students participating in Erasmus programs from Germany and Slovenia. This initiative is not only an educational exchange but also a celebration of innovation, sustainability, and the rich cultural heritage of Fuerteventura.
Students from Slovenia: Future-Focused Learning
From Slovenia, a group of six enthusiastic students and two dedicated teachers has arrived from the quaint town of Laporje. These third-year ESO students are engaged in a project centered around the future of work. They are not merely passive participants; the students are also involved in an eTwinning project alongside local educational institutions and their German counterparts.
The excitement doesn’t end here! This exchange program is set to continue in June when the Majorero students will travel to Germany, allowing for a reciprocal cultural and educational experience that promises to strengthen the bonds formed during their time in Puerto del Rosario.
A German Perspective: Immersive Experiences Await
Across the landscape, a different dynamic unfolds as 14 students and two teachers from Dresden, Germany, arrive in Puerto del Rosario. These students, who are in their fourth year of ESO and are studying Spanish, will engage in numerous educational and cultural activities during their stay.
The experience aims to foster intercultural dialogue, enabling the German students to not only enhance their language skills but also learn about local customs and lifestyles through direct interaction with their peers in Puerto del Rosario.
A Journey of Innovation and Sustainability
The visiting students won’t remain isolated within the confines of the classroom. They will explore various locations around the island that are closely linked to innovation, entrepreneurship, and new working methodologies. The Ayuntamiento has organized an enriching agenda that includes a lecture on tourism and innovation, a visit to the CIFP Majada Marcial to explore its pioneering robotics project, and a tour of the Fuerteventura Technology Park.
This hands-on experience aims to broaden the students’ understanding of modern work environments, particularly in the context of emerging technologies.
A Commitment to the Environment
As part of their mission to engage with the community and promote sustainability, the German group will participate in an environmental activity dedicated to cleaning beaches and collecting microplastics. This initiative, organized in collaboration with local entities Limpiaventura and Avanfuer, highlights the students’ genuine concern for environmental protection.
It is a practical way to not only educate them about the environmental challenges facing island communities but to also instill a sense of responsibility and action towards preserving natural areas.
Celebrating Local Traditions
The partnership extends beyond educational activities to encompass the cultural heritage of Fuerteventura. Thanks to the collaboration with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, students will delve into the island’s traditions through a project titled No olvides lo nuestro. This initiative will introduce them to the local way of life and traditions, enriching their understanding of the community.
Additionally, students will partake in aquatic activities and explore various cultural sites, including museums and local artisan fairs. These experiences will not only be memorable but will also provide a deeper appreciation of the island’s unique culture.

The importance of such exchanges is underscored by Puerto del Rosario’s mayor, David de Vera, who emphasized that these initiatives create enriching experiences for both incoming students and local youth. He affirmed that the city fosters an environment where education, innovation, and coexistence thrive together.
Education councilor Toñi Fernández Aragón echoed these sentiments, stating that Erasmus programs help cultivate values such as cooperation, tolerance, and shared learning. “Students are not just practicing languages but discovering new realities and forming lasting connections,” she noted.
Meanwhile, the tourism councilor, Rosa Rodríguez, highlighted that welcoming international students also serves to present the authentic and welcoming image of Puerto del Rosario and Fuerteventura.
