Celebrating International Museum Day at the Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum
Each year, on May 18th, the world comes together to celebrate the International Museum Day (DIM), an event dedicated to raising awareness of the significance of museums in our cultural landscape. In 2023, the Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum is joining this global movement with an exciting array of educational and family-friendly activities, exhibitions, and a unique theatrical tour.
Engaging Local Communities: “Archaeologists for a Day”
At the heart of the celebrations is the educational project titled “Archaeologists for a Day: Discovering the Secrets of the Majo People.” This initiative aims to promote the understanding, dissemination, and preservation of Fuerteventura’s rich indigenous archaeological heritage. The local educational centers are invited to collaborate and engage in this interactive project, designed to foster appreciation and respect for the island’s archaeological past. Rayco León, the councilor involved, emphasizes the project’s role in encouraging a communal approach to learning about and valuing the island’s history.
A Photographic Journey: “Archaeology of the Gaze”
On May 14th, at 19:00, the Fuerteventura Archaeological Museum will open an intriguing exhibition titled “Archaeology of the Gaze: The Photographic Work of Luis Diego Cuscoy.” This exhibition offers visitors a multifaceted look at the works of Cuscoy, a former director of the Archaeological Museum of Tenerife. Through a blend of photographs, audiovisual materials, and 3D elements, attendees are invited to explore the intersections of archaeology and visual storytelling. The exhibition is a collaborative effort led by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands and the Canary Institute for Cultural Development.
Cultural Cycle: “Survivals – An Ancestral Culture”
Following the exhibition, at 19:30, the Cultural Cycle “Between Vitrines” will host a session titled “Survivals – An Ancestral Culture.” This event will cast a spotlight on the indigenous knowledge of Fuerteventura, featuring distinguished experts such as Vicente Hernández, Antonio Cabrera, Silverio López, and Guillermina Barrios. They will share their insights and experiences, enriching the audience’s appreciation of the island’s cultural heritage.
New Discoveries in Archaeology
On May 16th, visitors can look forward to an insightful presentation at 19:30 by Jonathan Santana, a prominent labor professor in Prehistory and Archaeology at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Santana will present groundbreaking findings related to the IsoCAN project, shedding light on how the indigenous Canarians colonized and thrived on the islands for over a millennium, despite their isolation. Attendees will leave with enhanced understanding of the intricate history underlying Fuerteventura’s archaeological landscape.
Interactive Theatre Experience: “Living Museum”
In an effort to create a dynamic and engaging experience, the museum will also host a theatrical route called “Museo Vivo” (Living Museum) on May 16th, starting at 20:30. This theatrical performance will be repeated on May 17th at 12:00, specifically designed for family audiences. Participants will be guided through the exhibition halls by characters such as the indigenous figure Tenaida, the patron Alfonso Martín Fajardo, and Margui the bioanthropologist. This creative approach infuses life into the exhibits, making history accessible and enjoyable for all.
Family Archaeological Workshops
Accompanying the theatrical festivities, on May 17th at 11:00, the museum will conduct family-oriented archaeological workshops. These interactive sessions are aimed at helping families understand and appreciate Fuerteventura’s indigenous past. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that unpack the complexities of ancient life on the island.
