The Biosphere Reserve Network Strengthens Its Scientific Coordination

Strengthening Biodiversity Conservation in the Canary Islands

On a vibrant Tuesday, the Canary Islands’ Department of Ecological Transition and Energy hosted the inaugural Regional Meeting of Scientific Councils for the Canary Biosphere Reserves Network in Puerto del Rosario. This landmark event aimed to enhance inter-island coordination and foster technical and scientific exchanges among the seven Biosphere Reserves within the archipelago.

A Platform for Collaboration

The meeting was part of the first Action Plan of the Canary Biosphere Reserves Network and collaborated with the Fuerteventura Cabildo. The day’s agenda consisted of two sessions: a technical forum in the morning held at the Youth Insular Center, followed by a public open session at the Palace of Training and Congresses in the afternoon. The participation was robust, with representatives from technical sectors, the scientific community, and public institutions contributing to the discussions.

Insights from Leadership

Miguel Ángel Morcuende, the Director General of Natural Environment, emphasized the strategic importance of Biosphere Reserves. He remarked that these areas are vital for promoting a balanced development model that harmonizes the conservation of natural heritage with social and economic well-being. He noted that the event served to strengthen cooperation between the islands and highlighted the need for scientific and community participation in addressing challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

Voices from the Cabildo

Lola García, the President of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, underscored the significance of inter-island collaboration in safeguarding biodiversity and promoting sustainability. She acknowledged that protecting these unique ecosystems requires integrated efforts across the islands. Additionally, Marisa Tejedor from the UNESCO MaB Scientific Committee provided international scientific perspectives, enriching the discussions with broader insights.

An Overview of the Biosphere Reserves

The Canary Islands boast seven esteemed Biosphere Reserves: Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, La Palma, El Hierro, Gran Canaria, and the Anaga Massif. These reserves form part of an international network that demands continuous planning, evaluation, and cooperation to maintain their ecological integrity and cultural significance.

Technical Sessions: Empowering Local Expertise

The morning session focused on engaging scientific councils and technical teams to deliberate on topics related to governance, conservation, and socio-economic development. This gathering created a stable forum for ongoing scientific collaboration, aiming to enhance the management practices across the reserves. The topics discussed included strategies for fostering local communities’ involvement, ensuring that conservation efforts align with their needs and realities.

Engaging the Community

The afternoon session opened its doors to the public, allowing community members to engage with experts about current challenges in conservation, sustainability, and heritage. Participants gained valuable insights into how they could contribute to preserving their natural surroundings while understanding the broader implications of their local actions.

Technical Support Office Contributions

This regional meeting is part of the ongoing efforts by the Technical Support Office for the Canary Biosphere Reserve Network, which aims to improve coordination and efficacy within this network. By bridging gaps between science, policy, and local practices, the office strives to ensure that the unique values of the Canary Islands’ biospheres are sustained for future generations.

By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the event has set a solid foundation for collaboration that will help the Canary Islands navigate the pressing environmental challenges they face today.
