Celebrating the Canary Islands: La Oliva’s Cultural Festivities Kick Off

The Ayuntamiento de La Oliva is gearing up to host an exciting lineup of events in celebration of the Día de Canarias. Spanning from May 18 to May 29, the celebrations will take place across El Cotillo, Corralejo, and La Oliva, offering a diverse cultural, commercial, and gastronomic experience that captures the spirit and identity of the Canaries.

A Focus on Culture in El Cotillo

The festivities kick off in El Cotillo from May 18 to May 23, where the Concejalía de Cultura will lead a series of activities that highlight local traditions and the rich cultural heritage of the Canary Islands. The programming promises an engaging blend of workshops, talks, and activities tailored for audiences of all ages. The event themes range from “Cultura y raíces” to “Tradiciones y sabores,” ensuring that participants explore various aspects of Canarian culture.

Highlighting Local Gastronomy

Central to the celebrations is the emphasis on gastronomy. Workshops will introduce attendees to traditional Canarian cooking techniques, allowing them to taste and learn about local delicacies. Activities such as the Gastronomy theme will include tasting sessions that emphasize the distinct flavors of the region. Participants can look forward to a contest featuring local dishes, such as a stew made from goat meat, and the preparation of traditional staples like gofio and pella.

A Grand Day of Festivities

The Día grande, or Grand Day, will be a focal point of the celebrations, taking place in the Plaza Pública de El Cotillo. Starting at 10:00 AM, the public can indulge in a day filled with activities, culminating in the Gran Baile Popular Canario at 5:30 PM. Local authorities indicate a booming interest in this event, with many tables already reserved for an energetic evening of dance and music.

In a nod to local heritage, the day will also feature the concert “Canto al Trabajo.” Organized by Pieles de Laboratorio Escénico from Tenerife, this performance pays tribute to ancestral ties to the land and domestic life. Additionally, there will be awards for the best table decoration and the best traditional attire, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in the local customs.

The “Semana Canaria ¡Enyesque Comercial!”

Following the main festivities, Corralejo, La Oliva, and El Cotillo will host the Semana Canaria ¡Enyesque Comercial! from May 20 to May 29. A highlight of this week-long series of events will be the Mercadillo Canario—a bustling market featuring 24 booths dedicated to local crafts. This is an excellent opportunity for artisans to showcase their work, and for visitors to purchase unique souvenirs that embody the craftsmanship of the region.

The commercial activities will engage the community with dynamic initiatives, including “La Ruleta El Tenderete,” where shoppers can win €3,000 worth of gift vouchers when they make purchases at local stores. This exciting draw not only supports local commerce but also encourages residents and tourists alike to shop within the community.

Engaging Activities and Performances

The week will also be filled with interactive activities catering to both young and old. Families can partake in workshops where children can experience traditional games and sports like “salto del pastor” and “juego del palo.” Furthermore, there will be musical performances, parrandas, and cultural exhibits that showcase the vibrancy of Canarian folklore.

Commitment to Local Identity and Culture

Members of the La Oliva town council have expressed their enthusiasm and commitment to preserving the region’s rich heritage. Isaí Blanco, the mayor, emphasized that this program reflects the municipality’s dedication to cultural roots, stressing the importance of passing down these traditions to future generations.

David Hernández, the cultural councilor, added that the programming brings together the best of Canarian culture during these special weeks, aiming to promote local identity not only to citizens but also to visitors.

Alexandra Martín, the commerce councilor, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the necessity of supporting local commerce and identity through community events that celebrate “our people and our municipality.”

This festival season promises to celebrate the essence of the Canary Islands, fostering a spirit of unity and pride while inviting everyone to partake in the cultural richness of La Oliva.
