Staying in a residencia in Spain and Riad D’ari in Tetuán provided Schrauben with opportunities to forge friendships with fellow students from around the globe. “It was like an international dorm complex in Spain,” she described, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of her peers. These connections not only enriched her social experience but also fostered a sense of community among the students.

Culinary Adventures

Food played a significant role in Schrauben’s journey. The meals provided at the residencia and Riad offered her a taste of authentic Spanish and Moroccan cuisine. She particularly enjoyed the traditional Moroccan breakfast, which was a delightful introduction to the local culinary culture. “It was kind of cool because we arrived in Spain and learned about their history and what brought them to their point where they were,” she reflected.

Engaging with Local Communities

The program also included visits to various cultural and ideological centers, such as the headquarters of the Romani community in Madrid. These experiences allowed Schrauben and her classmates to gain insights into the struggles faced by minority groups. “We also got to see how that identity fits into broader stereotypical experiences,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of understanding diverse perspectives.

Throughout her travels, Schrauben kept a journal filled with doodles and reflections that captured the essence of her experiences. “I would like to doodle a sandwich when we get a really good sandwich or doodle cards,” she said, illustrating how she documented the small yet significant moments of her journey. With plans to work for the Peace Corps or a humanitarian NGO in public relations, she is eager to apply her newfound knowledge and skills in a professional setting. “I am fascinated with cultural context and the way different cultural identities merge within a nationality and a nation-state,” she stated, underscoring her commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
