Exploring the Rich Landscapes and Unique History of Fuerteventura through Storytelling

Fuerteventura, one of the stunning Canary Islands, continues to inspire creativity through its idyllic landscapes and rich history. This year, a special program called IsLABentura serves as a platform for screenwriters to develop compelling narratives that are intricately woven into the fabric of this enchanting island. With a focus on the diverse scenery of Fuerteventura and the notable history of Puerto del Rosario during the 1980s, this international script laboratory is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands alongside the Fuerteventura Film Commission.

IsLABentura: A New Wave of Storytelling

IsLABentura is not just another scriptwriting workshop; it offers a unique blend of immersion into local culture and landscapes. Screenwriters participating in this program are given a rare opportunity to delve into the essence of Fuerteventura. The first phase of the laboratory emphasizes documentation, allowing writers to connect with the island’s history and its people authentically. Two scriptwriters, Cristina Naranjo and Juan Pedro Vera, have already begun exploring the local culture and breathtaking settings that will flesh out their respective stories.

Nereida Calero, the area’s councilor, highlights the importance of this preliminary phase: “It’s essential for creators to experience firsthand the landscapes, culture, and nuances that will transform their scripts into authentic narratives with their own identity.”

The Plot Thickens: Original Stories Emerging

Each story represents a unique viewpoint, shaped by the island’s charm and cultural significance. Cristina Naranjo is developing a feature film titled ¿Aceptas casarte con T.N.? This fictional piece centers around Laura, who decides to reunite with her past partners as she contemplates whom she should marry. In a bid to ground her script in the reality of the island, Cristina has visited incredible locations such as Betancuria, Ajuy, and Costa Calma, soaking up the essence of these spots to inspire her narrative further.

On the other hand, Juan Pedro Vera is crafting a series titled Barlovento. This project takes viewers back to the 1980s in Fuerteventura, when a significant military presence arrived on the island with 5,000 legionnaires. Through his series, Juan aims to reflect the complicated social interactions and cultural adjustments that arose from this sudden influx of soldiers. His research has been extensive; he has conducted interviews with notable figures, including Tero Brito, the official chronicler of Fuerteventura, and Gerardo Mesa, a former president of the Cabildo.

Immersive Research: Walking Through Fuerteventura’s History

As part of his documentation process, Juan Pedro has walked through historical sites frequented by the legionnaires and other significant locales in Puerto del Rosario. These excursions, often accompanied by veterans who lived through the era, have offered Juan invaluable insights into the human experiences and stories that once echoed across the island. His dedication to capturing the true essence of the time period promises to bring a level of authenticity and depth to his narrative.

Looking Ahead: The Path of Creation

With the first phase complete, IsLABentura will transition into a training segment starting in July. This phase further enhances the scriptwriters’ skills before they present their work during a final pitch session, where they will showcase their projects to various producers. It’s a thrilling culmination of hard work, creativity, and profound exploration of Fuerteventura’s landscapes and history.

By embracing local culture and drawing inspiration from the island’s stunning scenery and complex history, the writers involved in IsLABentura are not only enriching their scripts but also contributing to a broader narrative about Fuerteventura itself. This initiative not only prioritizes storytelling but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the island, making it a noteworthy chapter in the world of film and creative writing.
