Fuerteventura, one of the stunning Canary Islands, has taken significant steps to enhance its tourism appeal through targeted professional initiatives. The Patronato de Turismo de Fuerteventura, in collaboration with eight businesses from the local tourism sector, has recently hosted professional sessions in key northern Spanish cities—Oviedo (Asturias), Santander (Cantabria), and San Sebastián (País Vasco). This strategic endeavor aims to showcase the island’s offerings while paving the way for sustainable tourism.

Engaging with Industry Professionals

Approximately one hundred tourism sector agents attended these informative sessions, eager to learn about Fuerteventura’s most captivating attractions, alongside the vast offerings from the participating companies. The companies involved prominently included well-known names such as Elba Hoteles, Fergus Hoteles, World of Hyatt Inclusive Collection, LIVVO Hoteles, Meliá Hoteles, Playitas Resort, R2 Hoteles, and Oasis Wildlife. Their participation illustrated a unified front, dedicated to promoting Fuerteventura as a compelling travel destination.

Public-Private Collaboration

One of the standout features of this initiative, as highlighted by Tourism Counselor Marlene Figueroa, is the robust public-private collaboration. The partnership between the Patronato de Turismo and local hotel chains, including Oasis Wildlife, is designed to forge strategic alliances with travel agents and promoters. Figueroa emphasized that this collaboration aims to showcase the island’s rich heritage, enchanting landscapes, natural beauty, and diverse cultural, culinary, and sports offerings to potential visitors.

Enhanced Connectivity to the Mainland

A crucial aspect of attracting tourists from the mainland is improving flight connectivity. Marlene Figueroa underscored the direct flight connections between Asturias and Fuerteventura, operated by Volotea Airlines. These flights, operating every Saturday, are instrumental in not only bringing visitors to the island but also allowing residents of Fuerteventura to explore the northern regions of Spain. By continuing to enhance this connectivity, Fuerteventura aims to draw more national visitors while facilitating travel for its locals.

Strategic Partnerships for Mutual Benefit

Amid these discussions, Figueroa met with Lara Martínez, the vice-counselor of Tourism for the Principality of Asturias. Their meeting revolved around the potential for a regular bridge-flight service between Fuerteventura and Asturias. They explored various avenues for reciprocal promotion, including establishing strategic synergies within networks like Saborea España and the Spain Convention Bureau. These collaborations aim to enrich the overall tourism experience and encourage greater engagement between the two regions.
