Chilegua Trail: Sustainability as a Flagship Initiative

The Chilegua Trail: A Sustainable Adventure in La Pared

This Saturday, October 26, La Pared will host the second edition of the Chilegua Trail, a burgeoning event that has attracted significant attention, drawing 260 participants from diverse backgrounds. This trail running competition not only champions athleticism but also embodies a deep commitment to sustainability and local development. Organized by Alisios Gestión Sociodeportiva and buoyed by Excelfuert, the Chilegua Trail aims to set a benchmark in sustainable tourism.

An Event that Unites Cultures

Director Néstor Rodríguez has noted the remarkable response to the event, highlighting the participation of runners from seven different nationalities. “We are thrilled with the turnout,” he said. “This event showcases the beauty of Fuerteventura’s natural environment while promoting sportsmanship.” Rodríguez emphasized that a key goal is to present an environmentally respectful tourism model that facilitates local growth.

Local Empowerment and Community Spirit

In an interview on Radio Insular’s “La Voz de Fuerteventura,” Guacimara Cabrera, president of Excelfuert, affirmed the event’s significance for the island. Describing the Chilegua Trail as “more than just a race,” she noted its local roots and the entrepreneurial spirit of youth in Fuerteventura. Cabrera pointed out that the Chilegua area is often overlooked, but initiatives like the trail have sparked its revitalization, restoring historic paths and landscapes.

Embedding Sustainability Into Every Step

Sustainability is woven into the fabric of the Chilegua Trail. Participants are required to label all wrappers, such as energy gels and bars, with their race numbers to ensure no litter is left behind. Rodríguez highlighted this initiative as essential for maintaining the area’s cleanliness. “If any waste is found, we will know to whom it belongs,” he explained. Additionally, a sustainability raffle will reward those who dispose of their waste correctly at the finish line.

Environmental awareness extends beyond waste management; runners will also be educated about the local ecosystem. Prior to the race, participants will receive information about significant aspects of the trail, such as the Montaña de Cardón and endangered plant species in the region. “It’s about fostering a respect for the natural world,” Rodríguez added.

Diverse Athletic Options for Everyone

The race features various formats catering to differing fitness levels. The Half Trail stretches nearly 26 kilometers, offering breathtaking views of both scenic and cultural significance. For those seeking a more approachable challenge, the Promo and Hiking options cover 11 km. Youngsters will not be left out either, with dedicated children’s races designed to match different age groups.

Prominent athletes expected at this thrilling gathering include Toñi Sánchez, Nayra Noble, Samuel Santana, and others, adding an electrifying competitive edge to the event.

A Festival of Culture and Activities

Beyond the race, the event will showcase parallel activities such as a craft market and an astronomical night hosted by Astrociencia Nómada, a local enterprise. Given Fuerteventura’s designation as a Starlight Reserve, attendees will have the rare opportunity to gaze at the stars above. Musical performances by Javi Chacón and DJ Samuel will further enliven the atmosphere.

Collective Call to Action

Both Rodríguez and Cabrera have made heartfelt appeals to the community to participate in this vibrant event, underscoring the importance of supporting initiatives that foster sustainable development and preserve Fuerteventura’s natural heritage. Cabrera expressed pride in how the Chilegua Trail is evolving while promoting respect for the island’s unique landscape.

With its captivating blend of sustainability, community engagement, and outdoor adventure, the Chilegua Trail promises an enriching experience for all participants and attendees alike. The spirit of Fuerteventura shines in this trail running celebration that redefines what it means to participate in an event that benefits the environment and the local economy.
