The Popular Party of Fuerteventura has positively valued the launch, for the first time, of a headquarters for the University Entrance Test (PAU) in the south of the island, a measure that allows students from the municipalities of Tuineje and Pájara to take the exams without having to travel to Puerto del Rosario. The new headquarters, located at the IES Vigán in Gran Tarajal, welcomes 129 students this year, while another 423 students take the tests at the IES Santo Tomás de Aquino, in Puerto del Rosario. From the political formation they consider that this measure responds to a historical demand of families and the educational community in the south of Fuerteventura and highlight the role played by the Department of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, directed by Poli Suárez, in achieving this objective. The regional deputy and president of the Education Commission of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, María Saavedra, described the opening of the new headquarters as a “milestone” for the island and assured that it will make it possible to correct a situation that, in her opinion, placed students from the south in a disadvantageous position compared to the rest of the students in Fuerteventura. According to Saavedra, the launch of the headquarters has been possible thanks to the coordination between the Ministry of Education, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the management of IES Vigán. The popular parliamentarian also highlighted the involvement of the Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Poli Suárez, as well as the insular director of Education, Yurena Pérez, in the development of this initiative. For her part, the spokesperson for the Popular Party in the Tuineje City Council, Esther Hernández, expressed her satisfaction with the choice of IES Vigán as the official headquarters of the PAU and focused on the difficulties that students and their families faced until now during the exam days. Hernández recalled that many students from the south had to travel to Puerto del Rosario at dawn or even assume additional accommodation costs to be able to take the tests in adequate conditions. For the popular representative, the opening of the new headquarters represents a significant improvement for the students of the southern region and contributes to facilitating access to higher education on equal terms. PAU 2026 is being held in Fuerteventura until June 5 and is the first edition in which the island has two official venues for university entrance exams.
