A New Dawn for Antigua: Political Shifts and Collaborative Governance
In an unprecedented move, four political factions in Antigua have united to take a stand against what they perceive as ineffective leadership. As the political landscape in this municipality transforms, Juan Nicolás Cabrera, the president of the AMF (Agrupación Municipal de Fuerteventura), asserts that this collaboration is a necessary step toward revitalizing the area. “Antigua deserves a political change,” Cabrera emphasized, acknowledging the effort it took to forge this coalition amidst an ongoing legislative period.
The Need for Improvement
The AMF has identified a couple of critical areas requiring urgent attention: tourism and public safety. Once thriving sectors for Antigua, the current situation raises concerns among residents and stakeholders alike. “Antigua was an example until not long ago in areas like tourism and safety,” Cabrera lamented, hinting at the decline in quality and services that have affected the community. The urgency to revive these foundational parts of Antigua’s appeal cannot be overstated.
Catalyst for Change
Cabrera and other political leaders believe that the decision to unite was largely triggered by what they describe as the “almost unilateral” management of Mayor Matías Peña. This assessment resonates with Enrique Martínez, the island coordinator for the PP (Partido Popular), who has also pointed to Peña’s leadership as the primary issue. Similarly, Mario Cabrera, the CC (Coalición Canaria) island secretary, remarked on this “unipersonal politics,” which he argues alienated other factions and ultimately necessitated the coalition.
A Shift in Dynamics
Mario Cabrera elaborated on the challenges faced by Antigua’s local government, stating that the working dynamics had become detrimental to progress. Reflecting on their past, he noted that, until recently, their group was part of the governing majority. Now, however, they have come together with other parties to form an alternative government aimed at fostering better management and responsiveness to local needs. “We have converged these four parties to create a new team for governance,” he added, showing hope for what this coalition can achieve.
Focus on Functionality
Despite having the option to claim the mayoral position for their spokesperson, David Alberto, the political coalition emphasizes their true goal: ensuring that Antigua operates effectively and efficiently. Mario Cabrera affirmed that their priority is not to seek power but rather to guarantee that “Antigua gives answers” to its inhabitants’ needs and does not fall behind in achieving vital projects alongside other regions in Fuerteventura.
Time to Act
With an entire year ahead of them, these four political forces are focused on addressing the pressing issues facing the citizens of Antigua. As they mobilize their resources and strategies, the intention is clear: rekindle the spirit of community involvement and public service that many believe has been lost. The clock is ticking, and the residents are watching closely as these leaders work to restore integrity and functionality to their beloved municipality.
Through this coalition, there is a palpable sense of hope in Antigua, hinting that the dynamics of governance can significantly change when collaboration occurs, paving the way for a brighter future.
