New Electric Bus Route Enhances Travel in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura’s public transport system is set for a significant upgrade with the introduction of an express electric bus service that connects Puerto del Rosario to the island’s airport and the popular tourist area of El Castillo. This new addition promises not only speed but also a sustainable mode of transportation that aligns with global efforts to reduce emissions.
Efficient Travel Times
The new express bus service, designated as Line 3, takes just ten minutes to travel between Puerto del Rosario and the airport. It’s designed to facilitate quick and convenient travel for both residents and visitors, reflecting a growing need for efficient public transport solutions. The route, which stretches to El Castillo in the municipality of Antigua, is ideal for those commuting to work from the capital and also supports the tourism sector.
Commitment to Sustainability
The Fuerteventura Cabildo has invested substantially in this initiative, launching three high-performance electric buses that support a greener transport model. These vehicles were acquired through a budget of nearly two million euros, funded entirely by the Next Generation EU program, which focuses on sustainable mobility projects. This financial backing has alleviated the economic burden on local authorities, allowing them to prioritize eco-friendly upgrades.
Increased Service Frequency
In addition to the express features, the new Line 3 service will maintain its usual frequency during weekdays while also significantly increasing availability on weekends. It will see an impressive rise in weekday services, going from 66 to 98 on Saturdays—a remarkable increase of 48.5%. Sundays are also set to benefit from an increase in frequency, rising from 47 to 60 services. This expansion caters directly to the needs of the hospitality sector and users who require more reliable transit options during peak weekends.
Addressing Community Needs
Local leaders, including Lola García, the president of the Cabildo, have acknowledged that this enhancement comes in response to long-standing demands from the community, particularly those in the hospitality industry. The increased frequency on weekends ensures that the economic and recreational activities in the area remain accessible and efficient, allowing residents and tourists to explore Fuerteventura without the hassle of inadequate transportation.
Official Launch with Local Leaders
The launch ceremony for the new express bus line saw the participation of key figures, including María Fernández, the Director General of Transport and Mobility for the Canary Islands. She highlighted that the investment not only covers the purchase of the zero-emission buses but also entails the installation of rapid charging points and a vehicle tracking system that ensures operational efficiency.
Future of Mobility on the Island
The Line 3 express route marks just one of several enhancements planned for Fuerteventura’s transportation network. Other routes, including Line 16 and Line 5, are also set to see increased frequencies, contributing to a broader aim for a more interconnected and efficient public transport system—one that serves both residents and tourists better than ever before. This commitment to improving and expanding public transport services signifies a hopeful stride towards sustainable living and travel on the island.
