Celebrating 30 Years of Maritime Commitment Between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote
This Wednesday marks a significant milestone for Fred. Olsen Express, as the company celebrates three decades of dedicated maritime service connecting the stunning islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Over the years, this esteemed ferry service has transported an impressive 13 million passengers and around three million vehicles, including a wide range of cars and freight.
The Historic Beginning
Fred. Olsen began its operations between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura on July 24, 1989, with the launch of the Betancuria ferry. This vessel had the capacity to carry over 400 passengers and provided a seamless journey between Playa Blanca and Corralejo in just 35 minutes. With three departures daily, the Betancuria epitomized the company’s philosophy of ensuring rapid and comfortable travel with exceptional onboard service.
Evolution of Ferry Services
As demand grew, so did Fred. Olsen’s commitment to delivering superior service. The Betancuria was soon succeeded by the Buganvilla, a larger ferry accommodating 800 passengers. This upgrade was part of an ongoing effort to enhance the ferry experience, allowing for increased capacity and improved amenities.
The real game-changer came in 2003 with the introduction of the Bocayna Express, a state-of-the-art fast ferry that drastically reduced travel time between the two islands to a mere 20 minutes. This modern addition boasted seven daily connections from each island, making travel not only faster but also more convenient for both locals and tourists alike.

To commemorate this impressive 30-year journey, Fred. Olsen Express has released a special video expressing gratitude to all passengers and clients for their loyalty. In a year filled with notable anniversaries, 2019 marks Fred. Olsen’s 45th anniversary overall, celebrating its inaugural route between La Gomera and Tenerife. Furthermore, the company will celebrate a quarter-century of connecting Gran Canaria and Tenerife come December.
