Celebrating Philippine-Spanish Friendship: A Vibrant June of Cultural Activities
The Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes and its Cultural and Education Offices, is set to welcome June with an exciting array of cultural activities. This month-long celebration honors the rich historical ties and enduring friendship between Spain and the Philippines, emphasizing shared values of diversity and inclusion through various artistic and educational initiatives.
Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day
At the heart of June’s festivities is the commemoration of the 24th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day on June 30 in Baler, Aurora. This historic event pays tribute to the compassion and reconciliation shown by Filipinos towards the last Spanish soldiers stationed in Baler. Rather than viewing them as prisoners of war, the locals treated these soldiers as friends, a gesture that speaks volumes about the spirit of humanity that has characterized the relationship between the two nations.
To further strengthen these cultural ties, Instituto Cervantes will offer a zero-level Spanish language class to students at a local high school in Baler. This initiative not only promotes language learning but also fosters deeper connections between the two cultures through education.
Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion
On June 26, the Instituto Cervantes de Manila in Intramuros will host a vibrant celebration of Pride, showcasing the commitment of both Spain and the Philippines to diversity and inclusion. This event will feature an engaging talk on education and LGBTI rights, an open mic session, and lively music from local DJs. It’s a wonderful opportunity for community members to come together and celebrate the richness of diversity in both cultures.
Artistic Exchange: Manila Calling
Artistic dialogue between Spain and the Philippines takes center stage with the “Manila Calling” exhibition, which opens on June 6. This exhibition brings together talented artists from both countries, highlighting the evolving relationship between their creative communities. It serves as a platform for meaningful artistic exchange and collaboration, showcasing the unique perspectives and talents of artists from both nations.
Exploring Memory and Materiality
Spanish artist Cristina Mejias will also be showcasing her solo exhibition titled “Embracing the Wind, Cradling the Water” at the Vargas Museum in UP Diliman from June to September. This exhibition invites audiences to explore themes of memory, materiality, and imagination, further reinforcing the deep historical and cultural links between Spain and the Philippines.
In addition, acclaimed Spanish artist García de Marina will present two simultaneous exhibitions starting June 16. His work transforms everyday objects, giving them new identities and revealing the hidden poetry within the ordinary. Visitors can view his pieces at both the UP Vargas Museum and Instituto Cervantes in Intramuros, where he will also host a talk on June 18.
Buen Camino: Pilgrimage and Cultural Influence
Another notable exhibition, “Buen Camino,” opens on June 17 at the Museo San Agustin. This exhibition highlights the enduring religious and cultural influence of Spain in the Philippines through the pilgrimage route of St. James’ Way, or Camino de Santiago. The pilgrimage has gained popularity among Filipinos, becoming a significant part of their travel aspirations to visit Spain.
On the same day, Instituto Cervantes will present a webinar titled ¿Dónde vas con mantón de Manila? by Anna Wieck. This session will delve into the lasting cultural affinities between Spain and the Philippines, exploring connections in fashion, art, architecture, food, and language.
Street Art: A Lasting Impression
Throughout the year, the vibrant mark left by the Madrid-based street art collective Boa Mistura can be seen across Metro-Manila. From a basketball court in Tejeros, Makati, adorned with the word “Unyon,” to a colorful mural in Fort Santiago featuring the term “Tagpuan,” these artworks celebrate the cultural exchange and shared values between the two nations.
A Month of Cultural Richness
June promises to be a month filled with cultural richness, artistic expression, and educational opportunities that celebrate the deep-rooted friendship between Spain and the Philippines. Through various events and exhibitions, both nations continue to honor their shared history while looking forward to a future of collaboration and mutual respect.
