Agrocanarias 2026: A Showcase of Canarian Cheeses in Competition

Celebrating Canarian Cheese: The Agrocanarias 2026 Contest

The vibrant culinary landscape of the Canary Islands is set to shine even brighter with the upcoming Agrocanarias 2026 Contest, where a remarkable 264 cheeses will compete for recognition. Organized by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA), this event aims to celebrate and promote the best cheese productions from the Archipelago, particularly those crafted under differentiated quality labels. This year’s participation marks an impressive 18.39% increase compared to the previous edition, and a staggering 58.08% rise since 2023.

A Showcase of Local Talent

Scheduled for June 24 and 25 in La Palma, the contest will feature the creations of 85 cheese factories, reflecting a 13.33% increase in participation from last year. The geographical diversity of the participants is noteworthy: 33 cheese factories hail from Gran Canaria, 15 from La Palma, 14 from Tenerife, 12 from Fuerteventura, 7 from Lanzarote, and 2 each from El Hierro and La Gomera. The cheeses themselves are equally diverse, with 102 entries from Gran Canaria, 51 from La Palma, 43 from Tenerife, 36 from Fuerteventura, and 26 from Lanzarote.

Inauguration Ceremony Highlights

The event will kick off with an inauguration ceremony attended by key figures, including the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, and the director of the ICCA, Luis Arráez Guadalupe. During his speech, Quintero emphasized the significance of the contest as a platform for promoting local cheese factories and their products. He noted the impressive growth in participation over the last three editions, highlighting the Canary Islands’ rich cheese-making tradition and its recognition on the global stage.

Supporting Local Producers

Luis Arráez Guadalupe reiterated the importance of initiatives like the Agrocanarias Contest in supporting primary sector producers. He announced a new feature for this edition: the ICCA will cover registration and logistics costs for companies wishing to participate in the World Cheese Awards in Córdoba this November. This support aims to ensure that local cheese factories can thrive and that their products are valued fairly by consumers.

The Unique Qualities of Canarian Cheeses

Alberto Paz, the island councilor for agriculture, expressed pride in the unique qualities of the island’s primary sector and its native breeds. The distinctiveness of local pastures, enriched by species like tagasaste and tedera, contributes to the exceptional quality and personality of Canarian cheeses. This local pride is echoed by councilor Daniel Cabrera, who highlighted the competition’s role in valuing products integral to the region’s identity and gastronomy.

Categories and Judging Process

The Agrocanarias Contest features a blind tasting system, ensuring that the judging panel evaluates the cheeses without knowledge of their origins. Cheeses are categorized based on several factors, including the type of milk used (pasteurized or raw), the livestock species (goat, cow, sheep, or mixed), and the maturation stage (fresh, semi-cured, cured, aged, and extra-aged).

The distribution of participating cheeses includes a variety of styles, such as tender pasteurized, semi-cured raw goat milk, and blue cheeses, among others. This diverse array ensures that the competition showcases the full spectrum of Canarian cheese-making artistry.

Awards and Recognition

The jury will award various distinctions, including great gold medals, gold medals, and silver medals. Special awards will recognize the Best Cheese of the Canary Islands, Best Organic Cheese, and Best Limited Production Cheese, among others. Additionally, a Best Popular Cheese award will be determined by a consumer panel, while a Best Cheese Chosen by the Children’s Jury will highlight the creativity and engagement of local youth.

The winning cheese will gain significant exposure through a report published on the ICCA’s website and distributed to various media outlets. Awarded productions will also have the opportunity to use the official prize insignia for one year and participate in promotional events organized by the ICCA.

Looking Ahead

All productions admitted to the competition will have their registration and logistics expenses covered for participation in the Gourmet Cheeses Championship 2027 in Madrid. This initiative not only fosters local talent but also positions Canarian cheeses on a broader stage, allowing them to gain recognition and appreciation both locally and internationally.

The Agrocanarias 2026 Contest is not just a competition; it’s a celebration of the rich culinary heritage of the Canary Islands, showcasing the dedication and craftsmanship of local cheese makers. As the event approaches, anticipation builds for a weekend filled with flavor, tradition, and community spirit.
