The Spanish semiconductor landscape has received a major boost. Openchip, a domestic chip design company, has successfully secured €115 million in public funding from the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT). The substantial investment package was officially cleared after receiving the green light from the country’s Council of Ministers.
Under the auspices of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Functions, this financing will be specifically designated to support the research and development of advanced processors. Openchip is an organization dedicated to developing efficient and high-performance chips that have been customized for artificial intelligence applications.
Driving Innovation and Economic Growth
According to official government statements, this capital injection is projected to significantly speed up Openchip’s product development timelines. Beyond the immediate technical advancements, the investment is expected to yield broader economic benefits for the country, including the creation of numerous highly skilled, technical positions within the region.
Furthermore, the funding aims to anchor and mature Spain’s growing microelectronics and semiconductor design sector. On a larger scale, the initiative fits into a continental push to reduce reliance on foreign technology and enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy in vital, cutting-edge industries. By backing open-source and highly efficient chip architectures, the Spanish government intends to elevate both national and European influence within the highly competitive global semiconductor market.
Dual Backing from National and Regional Authorities
The massive SETT investment comes closely on the heels of a separate agreement with the regional Government of Catalonia, which recently decided to acquire a direct equity stake in Openchip.
Pursuant to this arrangement in this region, Openchip is required to keep its official headquarters firmly within the region of Catalonia. As part of this agreement, the regional administration will also guarantee Openchip a specific place in the Board of Directors of this firm.
The government representatives emphasize that such joint financial support by both state and regional administrations presents a strategic approach. It will enable Europe to become strong in the global chip market and promote innovation and technological expertise in Europe.
Who is Openchip?
Openchip was established in 2021 as a result of the joint efforts of the Catalan engineering corporation GTD and the reputable Barcelona Supercomputing Center. Despite being a relatively new firm, Openchip has expanded quickly and now has about 300 employees.
This company deals with developing high-performance processors and accelerators based on the open RISC-V instruction set. The main aim of their engineering is to provide enormous computing power while reducing energy expenditure to the minimum possible level.
To keep its operations agile, Openchip runs on a fabless business model. This means the company focuses entirely on the intellectual property, research, and design of the chips, while completely outsourcing the actual physical manufacturing to specialized global foundries. This strategy allows Openchip to channel its resources into rapid research and commercialization without the massive overhead costs required to build and run independent silicon fabrication plants.
Funding Framework and SETT’s Broader Mission
The €115 million capital injection will be funneled through SETT’s Next Tech facility. This specific fund is backed by Spain’s broader Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which was established to provide vital financial runways for deep-tech startups and rapidly growing scaleups.
The Spanish Society for Technological Transformation plays a pivotal role in managing the country’s technology investments. Beyond the Next Tech facility, it is responsible for steering several other high-profile national programs. This includes the PERTE Chip program, which is a dedicated strategic framework focused entirely on boosting the microelectronics and semiconductor ecosystem across Spain. It also manages the Spain Audiovisual Hub, an initiative designed to drive digital innovation, production, and technological upgrades within the country’s audiovisual and entertainment sectors.
With this latest funding round, Openchip is positioned to become a central player in Spain’s bid to become a major hub for European semiconductor innovation.
