Recent Developments in Puerto del Rosario: A Closer Look

In a recent update from Puerto del Rosario, local leadership, particularly Mayor De Vera, has been making significant announcements that reflect ongoing changes in public services, education, urban planning, and social justice. Here’s an in-depth look at the key topics addressed.

Local Police Presence at the Ayuntamiento

Despite previous speculations about a reduction in police presence, Mayor De Vera emphasized that the Local Police would not completely vacate the Casa Consistorial (City Hall). He stated, “The Local Police will never cease to be present at the Ayuntamiento of Puerto Rosario,” assuring citizens that a restructuring of services is underway. This initiative aims to maintain a strong police presence at the municipal headquarters while simultaneously establishing specialized units to enhance public safety further.

This approach reflects a proactive stance towards community safety, aiming to ensure that law enforcement is both visible and effective within the jurisdiction.

Transport Public Strategy: No New Tender for Line 1

Turning to the topic of urban transport, Mayor De Vera clarified that there will be no new bidding process to reinstate the former Line 1 of the bus service. Instead, the municipal strategy focuses on modifying the existing 3S Line to accommodate previously underserved stops, especially in areas like Playa Blanca and Majada Marcial.

The former Line 1 had over 40 stops but suffered from very low usage, with frequencies exceeding one hour and forty minutes between buses, serving less than 100 passengers daily. In stark contrast, the current line modifications have dramatically increased ridership, with lines 2, 3, and 3S attracting more than 900 daily users. This strategic shift illustrates a desire to adapt public transportation to meet modern demands, reflecting the dynamic needs of residents.

The town hall has already presented the proposed modifications for the 3S Line to the service provider and is eagerly awaiting a response on the proposal’s feasibility.

Educational Infrastructure Development

Another critical area of focus is the advancement of educational infrastructure. Mayor De Vera has made it clear that one of his top priorities is the allocation of land for educational facilities. The Ayuntamiento has set aside over 20,000 square meters for new builds and expansions of existing schools. Notable sites include areas adjacent to the IES Santo Tomás de Aquino and IES San Diego de Alcalá, where plans for a new educational center are underway.

The Mayor underscored the importance of not being a “limiting factor” in the development of educational infrastructure, stating that these plans were initiated at the beginning of his mandate. The commitment to educational growth is further expanded to public housing, with 20,000 square meters earmarked for residential development. This dual focus demonstrates a comprehensive approach to urban and educational planning.

Housing Initiatives: Addressing Public Needs

On the topic of housing, Mayor De Vera remarked on the significant commitment to providing public housing. With an emphasis on collaboration between the Ayuntamiento and the Cabildo, he outlined plans for comprehensive projects, including the rehabilitation of 136 housing units on Cisneros Street and the creation of protected housing on Don Quijote Street. This commitment resonates with the overall goal of addressing the housing crisis while ensuring residents have access to affordable living conditions.

Additionally, plans for the future Palacio de Justicia (Court Palace) have already been presented and are awaiting approval for construction. This initiative aims to enhance civic infrastructure, underlining the administration’s dedication to urban development and community service.

Acknowledgement of the Yaiza Sotorrio Case

The discussion recently touched on the sensitive issue surrounding Yaiza Sotorrio, the former council member involved in a highly publicized legal case. Following the Supreme Court’s decision affirming the conviction of former council member José Juan Herrera Martel for continuous sexual harassment, Mayor De Vera expressed “the utmost respect” for Sotorrio and the judicial process. His declarations resonated with the commitment to uphold justice and support victims in similar situations.

The Mayor noted that this ruling opens the door for a contencious administrative path against the Ayuntamiento regarding Sotorrio‘s dismissal. He reassured that the city will act in accordance with the legal framework and judicial resolution, demonstrating a commitment to legal integrity and accountability.

Through these announcements, Mayor De Vera aims to showcase a proactive and strategic approach to governance in Puerto del Rosario, balancing issues of safety, transportation, education, housing, and social justice in a rapidly changing urban environment.
