Purposeful Collaboration

The event, supported by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, emphasizes the importance of coexistence and respect for diversity. A recent statement from the Cabildo underscored that the core aim of this initiative is to enhance social cohesion and encourage community participation. The president of the Cabildo, Lola García, highlights Fuerteventura’s identity as a welcoming island, where individuals from various backgrounds come together to form a richer society. She believes that initiatives like this are vital as they promote understanding, respect, and dialogue between different cultures.

A Spotlight on Local Leadership

David de Vera, the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, voiced appreciation for the upcoming week of activities, noting its significance not only for the municipality but for the entire island. He underscores the need for concrete actions that celebrate cultural, artistic, and sporting diversity as a true reflection of their society.

A Vision for Cultural Integration

With a focus on using culture as a vehicle for integration, education, and social transformation, the project encourages active community involvement.

Day One: Bridging Cultures

Kicking off the Semana Intercultural on July 22, an inaugural conference titled “Between Two Shores: Mauritania and the Canary Islands, a Bridge of Coexistence, Integration, and Cooperation” will delve into the historical, social, and environmental connections between the two regions. This foundational discussion sets the tone for the week, emphasizing how shared histories can create pathways for mutual understanding.

Engaging Activities Throughout the Week

The following days are packed with a variety of activities focused on cultural heritage, youth engagement, and gender equality. These activities aim to raise awareness about human rights issues and initiatives to eliminate female genital mutilation. The schedule also features a dedicated day for sports, music, and gastronomy, showcasing how these elements can promote cultural interplay.

Addressing Social Relevance

The program doesn’t shy away from pressing social concerns. Topics such as cooperation between the Canary Islands and Africa, defending human rights, empowering women, ensuring equal opportunities, and the role of youth in cultivating an inclusive society will be front and center. Participants can engage in reflective spaces and dialogues combined with vibrant cultural and participatory experiences, all designed to enrich community ties.

A Taste of Diversity

Throughout the four-day event, attendees can indulge in a range of engaging elements including conferences, talks, music performances, and sports exhibitions. An intercultural gastronomic space will also be featured, offering a taste of the culinary richness of both the Canary Islands and various African nations, allowing participants to savor the flavors of diversity.

A Symbolic Climax

The week will culminate in a unique encounter between practitioners of lucha canaria (Canary wrestling) and traditional Senegalese wrestling. This closing event symbolizes the bridging of cultures through sport, highlighting the shared values that underpin both disciplines.

With an array of engaging activities, the Semana Intercultural promises to be a vivid celebration of diversity, community, and cultural exchange, weaving together the stories and aspirations of the people of Fuerteventura and beyond.
