Revolutionizing Logistics: The Quantum Leap by Telefónica and Würth España

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Telefónica and Würth España, the Spanish arm of the Würth Group, have embarked on an innovative project that harnesses the power of quantum computing and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize logistics packaging. This initiative is taking place at Würth’s logistics center in Agoncillo, La Rioja, and represents a significant step forward in the application of cutting-edge technology in the logistics sector.

The Collaboration: A Triumvirate of Innovation

This pioneering project is not a solo endeavor; it is the result of a collaborative effort involving TECNALIA, Spain’s largest applied research and technological development center, and QCentroid, a startup specializing in enterprise quantum computing through its QuantumOps platform. Together, they are exploring one of the first industrial applications of quantum computing developed at Telefónica’s Javier Echenique Quantum Technologies Talent and Technology Center in Bilbao. This center is strategically positioned to place Spain at the forefront of applied quantum technologies in Europe.

Optimizing Packaging with Quantum Computing

At the heart of this project is the optimization of how products are packed into shipping boxes. By leveraging the latest capabilities of quantum computing and AI, the initiative aims to reduce both the number and size of packages required for each order. This optimization not only lowers what is known as “on-road volume” but also significantly reduces Würth’s per-order logistics costs.

The pilot program has already shown promising results, improving packaging efficiency for 14% of the over 6,000 orders processed. This optimization led to a 3% reduction in the number of boxes used, which translates into an approximately 7% decrease in truck transport volume and more than a 6% reduction in cardboard consumption. These results highlight the potential benefits that quantum computing can bring to logistics operations when combined with classical computing, paving the way for hybrid solutions that are practical and applicable today.

Telefónica’s Leadership in Quantum Computing

Through this project, Telefónica is solidifying its position as a leader in the promotion of applied quantum computing. The company has already made significant strides in innovation and communications security. Notably, Telefónica became the first operator to launch quantum-safe communications services, including secure interconnections between data centers. Additionally, it was the first operator in Europe to deploy an experimental metropolitan network for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies over its commercial network.

These advancements complement other innovation pilots, such as the one developed with Vithas, which enabled secure communications between healthcare facilities in Madrid using encryption based on QKD systems. Telefónica is also working on a pilot project for the Spanish National Police, securing communications between facilities in El Escorial and Canillas through a combination of QKD technologies and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

The Javier Echenique Quantum Technologies Talent and Technology Center

In January 2026, Telefónica inaugurated the Javier Echenique Quantum Technologies Talent and Technology Center in Bilbao. This center is poised to become a leading European hub for quantum technologies, developing use cases across various strategic sectors, including industry, energy, telecommunications, cybersecurity, logistics, banking, pharmaceuticals, and public administration. The center aims to enhance efficiency, security, and innovation capabilities for both businesses and institutions.

Leonor Ostos, Director of Product and Service Development at Telefónica España, expressed the significance of this innovation project, stating, “This project demonstrates that quantum computing, combined with artificial intelligence, can generate more and better services for customers. As a telecommunications operator, we continue advancing our commitment to becoming the best gateway for citizens, businesses, and public administrations to access digital technologies.”

Begoña López, Chief Operations Officer of Würth España, S.A., echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of innovation in driving efficiency and sustainability. She noted, “Participating in this pioneering project has enabled us to explore, from a highly practical and operations-focused perspective, the potential of emerging technologies such as quantum computing to address future logistics challenges.”
