Strengthening India-Spain Economic Ties: Piyush Goyal’s Official Visit

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal embarked on a significant journey to Spain on July 13, marking a pivotal moment in the 70-year diplomatic relationship between India and Spain. This visit coincides with the India–Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism, and Artificial Intelligence 2026, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration across multiple sectors.

High-Level Meetings: A Focus on Economic Cooperation

Goyal’s visit kicked off with a series of high-level meetings aimed at bolstering economic ties between the two nations. One of the key discussions took place with Spain’s First Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo Caballero. The agenda was ambitious, focusing on expanding trade, investment, and innovation cooperation.

The talks delved into critical areas such as market access, resilient supply chains, renewable energy, and green hydrogen. Both nations recognized the importance of advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and infrastructure in fostering a robust economic partnership. They also discussed the ongoing India–EU Free Trade Agreement, agreeing to utilize the Fast Track Mechanism for investments. The anticipation for the upcoming India–Spain Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation meeting later this year was palpable, signaling a commitment to ongoing dialogue and collaboration.

Industrial Cooperation: Clean Energy and Beyond

In addition to discussions with Cuerpo Caballero, Goyal met with Spain’s Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu Boher. This meeting aimed to strengthen industrial cooperation in various sectors, including clean energy, mobility, advanced manufacturing, tourism, automotive, railways, and smart infrastructure.

A significant highlight of this dialogue was the C-295 programme, which falls under India’s “Make in India” initiative. Both ministers expressed their commitment to fostering stronger industry partnerships, emphasizing the potential for collaborative projects that could benefit both economies.

The India–Spain Business Forum: Exploring New Opportunities

A cornerstone of Goyal’s visit was the India–Spain Business Forum, co-organized by prominent organizations such as FICCI, the Chamber of Commerce of Spain, CEOE, and ICEX Spain Trade and Investment. This forum brought together senior government officials and industry leaders from both countries, creating a vibrant platform for exploring new opportunities in trade, investment, and industrial collaboration.

During his address at the forum, Goyal underscored India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. He extended a warm invitation to Spanish companies, encouraging them to invest in sectors like manufacturing, infrastructure, renewable energy, digital technologies, and innovation. The event also featured an interactive session and networking reception, fostering connections that could lead to fruitful partnerships.

Boosting Investment Flows and Technology Partnerships

Goyal’s agenda also included discussions with officials from ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones, focusing on strategies to boost investment flows and technology partnerships between the two nations. This dialogue was crucial in identifying avenues for collaboration that could enhance economic growth and innovation.

Additionally, Goyal interacted with the Indian business delegation led by FICCI, motivating them to engage more deeply with Spanish counterparts. This interaction highlighted the importance of fostering business relationships that can lead to mutual benefits.

Commitment to Deepening Cooperation

Throughout his visit, Goyal emphasized the commitment of both India and Spain to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, industry, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges. This commitment is not just about economic growth; it’s about creating new opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries.

The visit by Minister Piyush Goyal marks a significant step in strengthening the economic ties between India and Spain, setting the stage for a future filled with collaborative potential and shared success.
