Fuerteventura en Música: An Exciting Festival on the Horizon

The vibrant island of Fuerteventura is gearing up for its next edition of the Fuerteventura en Música (FEM) festival. Set to take place over the weekend of June 30 and July 1, 2023, the festival will unfold on the stunning La Concha beach in El Cotillo, bringing together an array of both international and local artists.

Headlining Artists and Schedule

Kicking off the festival on its opening day is none other than the Colombian sensation Bomba Estéreo. Their unique mix of electronic beats, rock, reggae, and influences from Colombian musical styles promises to get everyone “moving their bones” on the beach. The festival has been officially announced by the president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret, during a presentation at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos, which gathered local government officials, including the Town Council members of La Oliva.

A Promising Line-Up

Sergio Lloret emphasized the significant appeal of this year’s festival, highlighting its “robust lineup” that is expected to attract both residents and visitors to the El Cotillo area. The organizing body has worked diligently to finalize the artist lineup well ahead of time, making this event one of the earliest announced in its history. Lloret expressed gratitude to the cultural team for their enormous effort in bringing this festival to fruition.

Insights from the Festival Director

Raúl Rivero, the festival director, also shared his enthusiasm, thanking the Cabildo for their support. He noted the importance of early announcement for the lineup, enabling citizens to plan and attend the event. Rivero explained that this year’s programming will include a diverse array of styles each day, grounded in a fusion of musical genres that center around a shared motif: the invitation to dance. This year’s festival will embrace “mestizaje,” or cultural blending, significantly enriching the festival experience while underlining the Canary Islands’ connection between Africa and Europe.

Municipal Support and Accessibility

Celino Umpiérrez, the Tourism Councilor of La Oliva, stressed the collaboration between the Insular Institution and the local government to bring the festival to life in such a compelling setting. He expressed wishes for it to achieve the success it deserves. Toni Pereira, another key official, encouraged everyone to attend, emphasizing that special transportation measures would be implemented to make accessing the festival easy for all.

Eclectic Performances and Cultural Significance

Bomba Estéreo will be joined on the first day by Nigeria’s Ara Queen of Drums, the canary-Venezuelan urban group Tabaiba, and the local timple player Althay Páez. Each act brings something unique to the stage, reflecting a rich tapestry of musical influences and styles.

On the second day, the festival will welcome La Pegatina from Spain, known for their upbeat performances that traverse genres like merengue, rumba, ska, and even gipsy punk. They will be accompanied by Ana Tijoux, a contemporary Chilean artist celebrated for her socially conscious lyrics that champion feminism and environmentalism through urban sounds.

Also performing will be the electronic cumbia of Instituto Mexicano del Sonido, led by the influential Camilo Lara, along with the R&B sounds from Nigeria’s Ruth Mahogany. Canarian artists like Mel Ömana, who brings together Cuban folklore and Latin rap, add to the local flair, joined by Saylén and Abora Reggae from Fuerteventura.

Environmental Awareness and Indie Spirit

As always, the Cabildo, in partnership with the La Oliva Town Hall, will maintain the festival’s foundational commitment to environmental consciousness and an indie spirit. The emphasis on unique musical expressions and respect for the natural setting reflects the festival’s goals from its inception.

With its eclectic mix of sounds and an enchanting coastal backdrop, Fuerteventura en Música promises to be an unforgettable weekend filled with rhythm, culture, and community spirit.
