The Saharawi community in Fuerteventura celebrated the recent approval of the nationality law by the Congress of Deputies on Thursday. This legislation allows for Saharawi individuals born in Western Sahara before September 29, 1977, and their descendants to apply for Spanish nationality. Ahmed Hassena, president of the Saharawi community on the island, expressed that the vote marks the beginning of rectifying a “small injustice” after over fifty years, estimating that around 1,000 people in Fuerteventura could benefit from this measure.
The day also held special significance as the community remembered activist Juambi Cabrera, who recently passed away.
