The Enchantment of La Oliva’s “Carnaval de Carnavales”
As the vibrant town of La Oliva prepares for one of its most anticipated events, the thrill of the “Carnaval de Carnavales” begins to fill the air. This year’s theme, “La India,” promises to bring an explosion of color, tradition, and exhilarating performances to the picturesque streets of Corralejo from March 13 to March 23.
A Collaborative Effort
Leading the charge in this festive endeavor is the Concejalía de Festejos, headed by the dedicated Omaira Saavedra. Her team has meticulously crafted an exciting program that honors both longstanding traditions and contemporary innovations. Key highlights include the Gala de Elección de la Reina Adulta e Infantil, the extravagant Gala de la Gran Dama, the highly entertaining Maratón de Murgas, and the grand Coso Carnavalero, which attracts thousands to its spirited procession. This year, the festivities are further enhanced with the introduction of sports competitions that resonate with the carnival spirit, offering events like the Carrera Carnavalera and the unique Carrera de Tacones.
Importance of Community Participation
Mayor Isaí Blanco emphasizes the significant role these festive days play in fostering community spirit: “The essence of carnival lives on in La Oliva, thanks to the active participation of residents and tourists alike, making this celebration one of the highlights of the year.” This notion of community engagement is echoed by Saavedra, who notes the hard work that goes into organizing such a spectacle: “We hope this carnival lights up Corralejo with magic, color, and joy, just as it does every year.”
A Diverse and Vibrant Schedule
Kickstarting the festivities on March 7 is the presentation of Murga Las Sargorías in Plaza Patricio Calero. This lively event also features guest performances from various murgas, including Los Garabatos and Las Traviesas, among others. As the main carnival event unfolds on March 13, attendees can look forward to an exciting inaugural parade showcasing the local carnival groups.
Among the must-see events in this year’s lineup, the Gala de Elección de la Reina Adulta on March 14 stands out for its glamour, while March 15 offers a “Carnaval de Día” filled with captivating musical performances from both local talents and artists from across the islands. The theatrical Gala Drag Queen on March 17 adds another layer of excitement, and the Coso Carnavalero on March 22 will transform the streets of Corralejo into a dazzling display of floats, vibrant costumes, and jubilant revelers. To wrap up the festivities, the Entierro de la Sardina on March 23 will feature a solemn yet spectacular farewell parade to the carnival season, complete with a fireworks display.
Additionally, on March 29, La Oliva will host the Carnaval de la Corbata, promising an inclusive evening of fun for the entire family, complete with live music and engaging activities.
