Canary Islands urge EU islands to unite on housing crisis.

The Government of the Canary Islands has called upon European island territories to collaborate in addressing common challenges, such as housing access and climate change. This appeal was made by Octavio Caraballo, the Deputy Counselor of the President’s Office, during the IV Forum on Leadership of the Islands of the European Union.

Caraballo highlighted the unique vulnerability of islands to climate change, affecting ecosystems, coastlines, natural resources, and economic activities. Key proposals include leading a working group with UN-Habitat to explore sustainable housing solutions, enhancing scientific cooperation for climate adaptation strategies, and advocating for the unique challenges faced by peripheral regions like the Canary Islands.

The initiative aims to leverage projects like Islas Responsables Lab to develop localized, sustainable solutions. Fuerteventura is one of the main islands in this region.
