The Popular Party of Fuerteventura has officially designated Esther Hernández Marrero as a candidate for the Senate for the island ahead of the elections on November 29. The former mayor of Tuineje will lead a candidacy completed by Ignacio Solana and Gema Ibáñez, with which the popular party aspires to recover island representation in the Upper House. The formation presents this candidacy as an opportunity to reinforce the defense of the interests of Fuerteventura in Madrid, after eight years of socialist management which, according to the PP, have been marked by the lack of investments, the abandonment of infrastructure and the absence of responses to some of the main needs of the island. Hernández assures that he faces this new stage with responsibility and with the purpose of placing the Majorera demands at the center of the national political debate. Among her main criticisms of the central Government, the candidate points out the treatment received by Fuerteventura in the General State Budgets, the actions of the General Directorate of Coasts on the historical and ethnographic heritage, the lack of personnel of the National Police and the Civil Guard and the non-compliance that she attributes to the Executive in matters of hydraulic investments and roads. Housing, one of the main axes of the candidacy The popular candidate places access to housing among the most urgent problems in Fuerteventura and considers that the policies developed by the Government of Pedro Sánchez have not offered sufficient solutions. Hernández criticizes that, during the last eight years, state actions in public housing have been insufficient to respond to the existing demand on the island. In this sense, it mentions the developments of Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario and points out that municipalities such as Antigua continue without having a public offer adequate to the needs of their neighbors. The candidate also questions the state Housing Law, to which she attributes an increase in legal uncertainty among owners and a reduction in the supply of properties intended for rental. As an alternative, remember the commitment announced by the national president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to promote the construction of one million homes in Spain. «Every time we govern we demonstrate with actions and not with words that we fulfill our commitments. After 29N we will do it again,” says Hernández. The maritime connection with Cádiz and the isolation of Fuerteventura Another of the issues that the candidate intends to bring to the Senate is the maritime connectivity between Fuerteventura and the Peninsula. Hernández denounces the loss of the direct connection between the port of Puerto del Rosario and Cádiz, a situation that, according to him, harms both the mobility of residents and the supply of goods and the cost of the shopping basket. The popular representative assures that, since last July, users have been forced to travel to Gran Canaria or Lanzarote to use the maritime connection with Cádiz. «Knowing what would happen, the socialist Government did not mind leaving us cut off from the Peninsula by sea. In fact, they still care little, because the reality is that since last July we have been forced to travel to Gran Canaria or Lanzarote to come or go to Cádiz,” he says. Faced with this situation, Hernández announces that the Popular Party will defend the declaration of a Public Service Obligation (OSP) that allows the maritime connection between Fuerteventura and the Peninsula to be permanently guaranteed. In his opinion, this measure would contribute to protecting the families’ economy and prevent residents of the island from being at a disadvantage compared to other territories. Previous experience in the Senate and in municipal politics Esther Hernández Marrero has previous experience in the Upper House, where she served as senator during 2018, in the XII legislature. During that stage she participated in different parliamentary commissions, including the Development Commission, of which she was vice president, and the one related to the Ecological Transition. According to the Popular Party, in that period it promoted initiatives linked to the recovery of El Castillo beach and the improvement of the number of Civil Guard troops in Fuerteventura. Subsequently, Hernández was mayor of Tuineje during the last legislature, a period in which the popular people highlighted her management in the sports and cultural fields. Currently, she carries out her political activity as spokesperson for the Popular Party in the Tuineje City Council and as an opposition advisor in the Fuerteventura Town Council. With his appointment, the Majorero PP begins the preparation of the Senate campaign with housing, infrastructure, citizen security, maritime connectivity and state investments as the main issues of its electoral speech.
