The 39th Insular Meeting of Christmas Carols in Antigua
The Cultural Department of the Antigua Town Council, in collaboration with the Mafasca Collective Foundation, is putting the finishing touches on the much-anticipated 39th Insular Meeting of Christmas Carols. This year, the event will once again be held in the stunning Iglesia de Antigua, a venue renowned for its exceptional acoustics and warm atmosphere. Scheduled for December 11 and 12, the gathering promises a delightful experience, with the Children’s Meeting taking place in the morning, followed by the Adult Meeting on the evening of Friday, December 13.
Call for Musical and Choral Groups
Aspiring participants have until November 14 to register. All musical and choral groups in Fuerteventura are encouraged to join, from children’s choirs and schools to seasoned adult ensembles. Interested parties can submit their applications through the Cultural Department of the Antigua Town Council, either by calling 690 685 505 or via email at fundacionmafasca@gmail.com.
The initiative aims to celebrate the rich cultural fabric of the region, and its inclusive spirit is evident. The organizers have also arranged for transport logistics, ensuring that groups can easily access the venue. Upon arrival, participants will be warmly greeted with the traditional “chocolatito navideño,” embodying the friendly and festive spirit of the occasion.
Community Emphasis and Artistic Value
The Mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña, highlights the importance of continuity in this cherished event, praising the ongoing support from the parish, which generously provides the church for the occasion. Meanwhile, Cultural Councillor Jonathan Peña notes the structure of the event, divided into two blocks—children’s and adults’, to encourage participation from educational institutions, music academies, and well-established choirs. Nereida Brito, the president of the Mafasca Collective, invites groups from all municipalities to sign up, aiming for a diverse showcase of voices spanning various styles and ages.
One of the hallmarks of the Insular Meeting of Christmas Carols is its unique blend of traditional and modern repertoires. Concert-goers can expect to hear a mix of Canarian carols alongside universal classics, updated renditions, and occasionally, original compositions crafted specifically for this event. The wide range of musical arrangements—featuring everything from polyphonic choirs to small instrumental ensembles—creates a delightful sonic tapestry, with each group offering its distinct flair.
More Than Just Music
Beyond its artistic contributions, this initiative promotes values of community engagement, cooperation, and intergenerational interaction. Shared rehearsals and rehearsing of different repertoires encourage camaraderie and cultivate friendships among participants. These interactions before and after performances serve to create a vibrant gathering space for neighborhoods, associations, and educational institutions, all uniting under the joyous theme of Christmas music.
Logistical Excellence for a Smooth Experience
On the logistical front, the Town Council is diligently coordinating schedules, sound checks, and performance rotations to ensure seamless transitions between groups and full utilization of the church’s acoustic advantages. Organizers emphasize to interested groups the importance of adhering to registration deadlines to secure their place in the lineup and ensure an orderly experience.
