Canarian Weekly – Saturday Forecast: Calima and Strong Northeasterly Winds Across the Canary Islands

Weather Forecast for the Canary Islands: March 14, 2026

As we step into the weekend, the Canary Islands are set to experience a mix of weather conditions, including light calima, strong winds, and slightly cooler daytime temperatures. According to the latest forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Saturday promises to be an intriguing day for both locals and visitors alike.

Temperature Trends

Daytime temperatures are expected to dip slightly, while minimum temperatures will remain stable in the eastern islands. In contrast, a slight increase in minimum temperatures is anticipated in other areas. This fluctuation means that while you might need a light jacket in the evening, the daytime will still be pleasant enough for outdoor activities.

Calima and Dust Conditions

The haze caused by Saharan dust, known as calima, is predicted to be light, primarily affecting higher altitudes. The most noticeable concentrations are expected on the mountain peaks and southern slopes of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as in the elevated areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Fortunately, the calima is expected to ease during the latter part of the day, allowing for clearer skies.

Cloud Cover and Rain Possibilities

Most of the archipelago will enjoy largely clear or mostly sunny skies. However, some cloud cover is anticipated during the early hours, particularly in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In the northern and northeastern regions of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, expect periods of cloudiness with a low probability of light rain. As the day progresses, these clouds are likely to clear, giving way to brighter conditions.

Wind and Sea Conditions

Winds will be moderate to strong, blowing from the northeast. Very strong gusts are possible on the southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands. While strong gusts are less likely inland, they may still occur in the southern parts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

At sea, northeasterly winds of force 5 to 7 are expected, leading to moderate to rough seas. El Hierro may experience rough seas, while Gran Canaria could see occasional rough conditions. A north swell of one to two meters is also forecast, with calima lingering over coastal waters around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura until the evening.

Island-by-Island Breakdown

Lanzarote
Expect mostly clear skies with occasional clouds in the north. Light calima will be present, especially in higher areas, but it should ease later in the day. Minimum temperatures will remain stable, while maximum temperatures will see a slight drop, particularly inland. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with strong gusts possible.
Temperature Range: Low of 16°C and high of 20°C.

Fuerteventura
Conditions will be predominantly clear, with some cloud cover expected at the beginning and end of the day in eastern areas. Calima will affect the island, particularly in higher zones, but is expected to ease later. Minimum temperatures will remain unchanged, while daytime temperatures will fall slightly. Winds will be moderate, strengthening inland with possible very strong gusts.
Temperature Range: Low of 16°C and high of 20°C.

Gran Canaria
Cloud cover is expected in the northeast below 1,000–1,200 meters, with a small chance of light rain before skies brighten later. The rest of the island will remain mostly clear, with light calima affecting mountain peaks and southern slopes. Minimum temperatures will remain similar, with a slight rise possible inland.
Temperature Range: Low of 17°C and high of 21°C.

Tenerife
The island will generally be clear or mostly sunny, although some cloud cover is expected in the north and northeast, where there is a slight chance of occasional light rain. Light calima will mainly affect higher areas and southern slopes, easing later in the day. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, becoming strong in low and mid-altitude areas.
Temperature Range: Low of 15°C and high of 22°C.

Final Thoughts

With a blend of weather conditions on the horizon, Saturday in the Canary Islands promises to be dynamic. Whether you’re planning a day at the beach, a hike in the mountains, or simply enjoying the local cuisine, be prepared for a bit of everything. The light calima, strong winds, and varying temperatures will add an interesting twist to your weekend plans.
