The storm will initially position itself to the west of Madeira, gradually moving southeast and directly impacting the islands.
Rain Expected from Tuesday
According to the latest data from the European model (EMCWF), the forecast indicates that rainfall will return to the islands starting Tuesday afternoon. The initial impact will be felt in the western islands, with the rain gradually spreading eastward to cover the entire region over the following days. By Wednesday, widespread rain is anticipated, particularly in La Palma and Gran Canaria, where the heaviest accumulations are expected. Winds will blow from the west in the western province and from the south in the eastern province, with intense rain likely on the eastern coast of Tenerife in the afternoon.
Continued Unstable Weather
The weather instability is set to persist across the Canary Islands on Thursday, although Lanzarote and Fuerteventura may experience less intensity initially. However, heavy rainfall is still expected in La Palma and Tenerife. Notably, snow is forecasted to appear from midday in Tenerife, with significant water accumulations anticipated throughout the afternoon. The combination of southwest winds and the snow line remaining at the peaks of Tenerife will contribute to the challenging weather conditions.
Very Wet Weekend Ahead
As the week progresses, Friday will maintain a similar weather dynamic, with abundant rainfall extending to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura by the afternoon. Significant water accumulations are again expected in the capital islands and La Palma, with snow continuing to blanket the peaks of Tenerife. The situation will evolve on Saturday, as winds shift to the west, bringing increased cloud cover and resulting in a rainy afternoon across the territory. The southwest of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, along with the west of La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, will be particularly affected.
This adverse weather pattern is projected to continue throughout Sunday, with precipitation expected across all islands. Winds will blow from the northwest in the western islands and from the south-southwest in the eastern islands, further complicating the weather conditions.
Given that several days remain until the weekend, it’s important to note that forecasts may be subject to change. Should the current projections hold, the activation of alerts from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) or corresponding preventive alerts from the Government of the Canary Islands cannot be ruled out.
