Urban Planning Seminars in Fuerteventura: A Step Towards Sustainable Development

The landscape of Fuerteventura is constantly evolving, and as the island draws more attention from visitors and residents alike, the need for effective urban planning becomes paramount. To address this pressing issue, the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Fuerteventura (COAF) has launched a series of Urban Planning Seminars. Sponsored by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Puerto del Rosario City Council, these seminars aim to foster knowledge exchange among professionals while delving deep into the intricacies of urban development.

A Rich Program at the Palace of Training and Congresses

Taking place at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos de Fuerteventura, the seminars commenced with a clear vision: to equip professionals with the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary for navigating the complex landscape of urban planning. The event, running until March 27, has attracted esteemed experts from across the region to provide insights into critical topics shaping the future of the island.

The Importance of Professional Development

Nereida Calero, head of the Territorial Planning Department at the Cabildo insular, highlighted the importance of such training for professionals in the field. Over three weeks, the speakers will tackle vital subjects that not only contribute to participants’ knowledge but also enhance their practical skills. This emphasis on continuous learning reflects a commitment to ensuring that the island’s development is not only sustainable but also inclusive of various community needs.

The Role of Local Authorities

The Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, expressed his pride in opening the seminar series. He emphasized how these workshops promote a collaborative environment where professionals can exchange knowledge and ideas. According to de Vera, the tools and regulations discussed will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of municipalities and the island as a whole. His remarks underscore the vital connection between policymaking and professional practice in urban planning.

Welcoming Professionals and Experts

Javier Guitiérrez, the treasurer of COAF, formally welcomed participants while appreciating the collaborative efforts of local government and the participation of key regional experts. The seminars feature an all-star lineup of speakers, each bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. This collaborative spirit truly sets the stage for a robust exchange of ideas.

A Comprehensive Look at Urban Planning

As the seminars progress, participants will explore foundational elements of urban planning, legal frameworks, and environmental considerations crucial for effective development. Jorge Arribas, Dean of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, underscored the relevance of these discussions, presenting them as an invaluable opportunity to deepen participants’ understanding of urban planning laws and practices.

Hands-On Learning Sessions

Each weekend features sessions focused on practical applications and considerations in urban planning. For instance, the first weekend set the tone, with Dr. Jesús Álvarez discussing the basics of urban planning and Feliciano Tavío, a geographer and lecturer, tackling the environmental evaluation of partial plans. These sessions not only share knowledge but also encourage critical thinking about sustainable practices.

Future Topics and Expert Contributions

Looking ahead, the seminars will explore additional topics vital for urban development. On the weekend of March 20-21, participants will engage with Mercedes Contreras, the secretary of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, who will discuss tools for urban development, alongside Jesús Luna, a technician specializing in architectural techniques. Finally, on March 27, attendees will benefit from the insights of Eduardo Risueño, a prominent public administration technician, who will illuminate the legal foundations underpinning urban planning.

These carefully curated sessions not only aim to enlighten but also to inspire participants to implement best practices in urban planning within their communities. The collaboration between various institutions serves as a model for how collective efforts can lead to enhanced educational outcomes and, ultimately, informed decisions that shape vibrant, thriving communities.
