Nueva Canarias celebrates the recent improvements at the Corralejo dock and calls for similar upgrades at other vital ports on Fuerteventura.
A Step Forward for Corralejo
The atmosphere in Nueva Canarias is one of palpable satisfaction following the execution of significant improvement works at the Corralejo port. This crucial infrastructure, not only vital for Fuerteventura but also for the broader Canary archipelago, is finally receiving the attention it has long deserved. Sonia Álamo, the spokesperson for the Nueva Canarias group in the Cabildo Insular, emphasizes that it was their political formation that, at the beginning of the legislative session, pushed for a motion to demand these crucial enhancements. The initiative, which was debated during the Plenary session in October 2023, successfully led to an amendment that extends these improvements to the docks of Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable as well.
“These are different debates. We highlighted then, and we continue to highlight now, the urgent necessity to carry out improvements in a facility that is fundamental for mobility, economic activity, and the image of Corralejo,” Álamo explained. The spokesperson points out that Corralejo is the second-busiest port in the Canary Islands, underscoring the urgency of the recent works completed. The political formation celebrates that a long-standing demand has finally been met, benefitting residents, workers, and visitors alike.
Expanding Improvements to Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable
Álamo insists that the focus should not be exclusive to Corralejo. The passed motion clearly indicated the necessity of acting in Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable, two ports that also suffer from maintenance deficits and pressing improvement needs, particularly regarding surveillance and safety protocols.
“We are pleased to see action being taken in Corralejo because it was essential and responds to a real demand. However, what happened here must have continuity in Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable,” Álamo added. The formation led by Álamo argues that public administrations need to maintain an ongoing commitment to modernize and upgrade the ports of Fuerteventura. The group asserts that it’s crucial to ensure proper, safe facilities that meet the standards necessary for the connectivity and economic activities of the island.
Ultimately, Nueva Canarias appreciates the progress made in Corralejo and expresses confidence that the outstanding improvements needed at other ports in Fuerteventura will be undertaken with the same level of commitment. “The actions in Corralejo are a good start, but we cannot stop here,” Álamo concluded.
