Fuerteventura Activates Emergency Plan Due to Rain Alerts and Flood Risk

Emergency Plan Activated in Fuerteventura Amid Weather Alerts

On the morning of Tuesday, April 8th, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura took proactive measures by activating the Territorial Insular Emergency Plan for Civil Protection (PEIN). This decision followed a weather alert regarding heavy rains, a storm pre-alert, and the risk of flooding as announced by the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands.

Weather Alerts and Preparedness Measures

The weather alert is set to go into effect from 00:00 hours on Wednesday. Despite the impending weather conditions, there have been no cancellations of sporting activities or outdoor events at this time. However, in anticipation of severe weather, the Cabildo has significantly bolstered emergency services. This includes collaborations among the island’s Security and Emergencies Department, the Island Water Council, local municipalities, and other sectors such as roads and environmental safety.

Coordination Meetings

Throughout the day, the Cabildo participated in a coordination meeting alongside CECOES 1-1-2, various island councils, and the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies. The purpose of this gathering was to oversee the Specific Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA) and to strategize the required actions in response to the developing weather situation.

Communicating with Local Authorities

Moreover, the insular corporation held a meeting with municipal representatives, where official recommendations were shared. Key points emphasized included the necessity for heightened vigilance in areas prone to flooding and the importance of not parking vehicles in risk zones to prevent potential damage.

Vulnerable Areas Identified

Several areas in Fuerteventura have been identified as particularly vulnerable to possible flooding. These include:

  • Barranco de Gran Tarajal
  • Endorreic Basin of Lajares and La Oliva
  • Barranco de Tetir
  • Barranco de Las Playitas
  • Barranco de Casillas del Ángel
  • Barranco de los Varichelos, located in El Matorral

These locations are under close watch as meteorological conditions evolve.

Community Engagement and Safety Precautions

The Cabildo urges the general population to remain vigilant and to adhere to the recommendations put forth by authorities. People are encouraged to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and to limit unnecessary travel during this alert period. Community cooperation is vital to mitigate the effects of the potentially severe weather conditions.

By promoting awareness and preparation, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura aims to safeguard both residents and visitors against the challenges posed by impending severe weather.
