Spanish Village, a Classic Tex-Mex Gem, Set to Make a Comeback

The Return of Spanish Village: A Houston Tex-Mex Icon

Four years after its closure, the beloved Tex-Mex restaurant, Spanish Village, is set to make a triumphant return to Houston. This cherished establishment, known for its vibrant atmosphere and mouthwatering dishes, first opened its doors in 1953 in the heart of the Third Ward. Over the decades, it became a staple for locals, renowned for its enchiladas and slushy margaritas.

A Journey Through Time

Spanish Village has a rich history that spans more than six decades. The Medina family, who originally founded the restaurant, operated it for over 60 years, cultivating a loyal fan base. In 2018, the restaurant changed hands when it was sold to Abhi Sreerama and Ishita Chakravarty. However, the new ownership faced challenges, and in 2021, they announced plans to close the restaurant. This decision was met with disappointment from many longtime patrons, including Houston Chronicle’s former food critic, Alison Cook, who had frequented the establishment since the 1960s.

Despite the closure announcement, hope was reignited when Steven Rogers acquired the property. He managed to keep the restaurant open temporarily, but by March 2023, Spanish Village officially shut its doors, with Rogers citing the lingering impacts of the pandemic and a desire to revamp the space.

A New Chapter Begins

Fast forward to 2027, and Spanish Village is set to reopen at its original address, 4720 Almeda Rd. This time, however, it will be part of a much larger three-story mixed-use development. Rogers envisions Spanish Village as the anchor of this new property, which will also feature retail stores on the first floor and an events space on the third. The total area will encompass approximately 19,000 square feet, promising to be a vibrant hub for the community.

Rogers, who also owns several other businesses in the neighborhood, including Bar 5015 and the bar Faces, believes that adding more retail and event space will help attract even more visitors to the Almeda Road area. “We’re in a good space to kind of pull people to an area that’s looking for food and beverage options, hospitality options,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to revitalizing the neighborhood.

Preserving the Legacy

While the new Spanish Village will feature modern enhancements, Rogers assures fans that the essence of the restaurant will remain intact. The decor and vibe will closely resemble what patrons have loved for years, ensuring that the nostalgic atmosphere is preserved. One of the most exciting aspects of the reopening is the return of the classic margarita recipe, which Rogers has kept safely stored, ready to delight customers once again.

Looking Ahead

As preparations for the reopening begin, demolition of the old space is scheduled to start soon. The anticipation surrounding the return of Spanish Village is palpable, with many eager to see how this iconic restaurant will evolve while honoring its storied past. With its rich history, loyal fan base, and a promising future, Spanish Village is poised to reclaim its place as a beloved dining destination in Houston.
