Improvements at the Corralejo Dock: Enhancing Operational Efficiency

The upcoming dock projection is set to be positioned outside the Network of Natura 2000, ensuring a respectful distance from protected areas. This strategic decision has received commendation from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, highlighting a significant reduction in the land footprint while effectively addressing maritime traffic needs.

Minimized Environmental Impact

Jana González emphasized that the Ministry’s support is indicative of the current government’s dedication to biodiversity preservation. She noted that the initiative aims to minimize impacts on cetaceans, turtles, and seabirds. “The anticipated impact of the project on marine biodiversity and protected spaces would be considerably lower,” she stated, reinforcing the commitment to ecological integrity.

In stark contrast, the previous design posed significant threats to numerous marine protected areas, including the Site of Community Importance (SCI) and the Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA). González recalled that the original project lacked adequate compensatory measures to alleviate its negative effects, a concern also highlighted by the Ministry.

The Path to a Sustainable Port

Throughout the current term, both the La Oliva Town Hall and the Fuerteventura Cabildo have emphasized the necessity to adapt infrastructure in harmony with the natural environment. The majorera congresswoman reiterated that this approach has enabled the Canary Islands Government to respond appropriately to local demands.

“This would have created evident negative consequences for the people of Corralejo,” she pointed out, referencing the concerns raised by the Local Political Council of Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura.

In this context, Jana González urged Councillor Pablo Rodríguez to continue collaborating with local authorities to advance the new project without delays. In response, Rodríguez stressed that meticulous work has gone into designing the dock, achieving a reduction in environmental impact across all assessed parameters.
