Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura: A New Era of Political Engagement

This past Wednesday, the Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura (AM-CC) convened the inaugural session of the Political Council for 2026. The meeting served as a platform to unveil the party’s work plan for the upcoming year, emphasizing their commitment to addressing local challenges and preparations for significant milestones, such as the 50th anniversary of Asamblea Majorera in 2027.

A Vision for Training and Development

One of the central themes of the session was the introduction of new training workshops aimed at both party members and public officials. These workshops are designed to strengthen the ideological foundation of the nationalistic party by exploring critical topics such as identity, demographic challenges, communication, innovation, and emerging technologies. Through this focus, AM-CC seeks to foster a more informed and capable membership, better equipped to navigate the complex socio-political landscape of Fuerteventura.

Revitalizing Community Voices: ‘Fuerteventura te necesita’

The discussion also highlighted a notable project: ‘Fuerteventura te necesita’ (Fuerteventura Needs You). The objective of this initiative is to rejuvenate community dialogue and respond to the varied demands of the population. By creating new sector-specific debate spaces, the party aims to engage actively with issues ranging from the primary sector, healthcare, infrastructure, to territorial planning. This initiative reflects AM-CC’s desire to not only listen to but also actively champion the needs of its constituents.

Striking a Balance: Tourism vs. Sustainable Development

A major point of contention raised during the meeting pertained to tourism growth in Fuerteventura. Over the last two decades, the island has witnessed a surge in population and tourism. AM-CC underscored the importance of regulating this demographic shift, advocating for a comprehensive residency law. They also reiterated the need for measures to mitigate tourism’s impact, suggesting the introduction of an ecotax and halting new hotel construction projects in favor of preserving the island’s ecological integrity.

One of the explicit achievements cited was the PTEOTI (Plan Territorial Especial de Ordenación de Turismo en Islas), which successfully halted the construction of 55,000 hotel beds to avoid the detrimental effects of overtourism on the island’s environment.

Protecting Natural Heritage: A Historical Commitment

The commitment to safeguarding the island’s natural spaces has always been a cornerstone of AM-CC’s ideology. The party proudly noted its historical victories in preserving significant areas, such as Saladar de Jandía and Isla de Lobos, from large hotel developments. This historical activism stands as a testament to their ongoing struggle for a more participative and sustainable model of island governance that respects local identity.

Energy Solutions: Emphasizing Sustainability

In their push for innovative energy solutions, AM-CC advocates for the implementation of renewable energy sources while ensuring responsible land usage. The party promotes utilizing anthropized areas, rooftops for solar panels, and fostering energy communities as viable alternatives. Furthermore, they propose supporting citizens in installing solar panels at home, suggesting this route could lead to genuine reduction in electricity bills and bolster local investment in sustainable energy.

Addressing Territorial Planning Challenges

A significant point raised during the session was the need for comprehensive territorial planning within Fuerteventura. Given the island’s flat geography, it is particularly vulnerable to external exploitation. AM-CC insists on paramount importance of drafting the General Municipal Plans and the Insular Landscape Plan (PIOF) to curb unregulated development. Their message is clear: they shall oppose multinational companies using local territory for their own gain at the expense of the island’s interests.

Honoring Local Leadership

Closing the session, the Political Council expressed its heartfelt support for Candelaria Umpiérrez, who announced her decision to step down as the municipal mayor of Tuineje. The Council acknowledged her dedication and hard work during a notably challenging term, showcasing the importance of loyalty and commitment within political leadership.

As the AM-CC looks forward to its 50th anniversary, these discussions set the stage for a strategic approach to navigating the political landscape of Fuerteventura, focusing on sustainability, community engagement, and preserving the island’s unique identity.
