Fuerteventura on High Alert: A Closer Look at the Situation
Severe Weather Warnings
Fuerteventura currently finds itself in a state of high alert due to the impending impact of storm Emilia. The government of the Canary Islands has raised the alert level to maximum for coastal phenomena, along with additional warnings for strong winds, heavy rains, and potential coastal flooding. This adverse weather situation is particularly significant for both Fuerteventura and its neighboring island, Lanzarote, prompting immediate action.
Suspension of Public Activities
In light of this serious weather forecast, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has enacted the Insular Emergency Protection Civil Plan (PEIN), declaring a pre-emergency state effective from 5 PM on Friday. This plan has led to the suspension of all public events and the closure of various municipal facilities. This includes museums, sports venues, and any activities intended for public participation. Notably, this suspension affects highly anticipated events, such as the Fuerte Nakama Puerto, set for December 13 and 14 at the Palace of Training and Congress, along with other scheduled activities.
Municipal Precautions
The municipality of Puerto del Rosario has also taken precautionary measures by activating its municipal emergency plan (PEMU) as a response to the alert. Similar to the actions taken at the insular level, the PEMU has led to the cancellation of outdoor activities that involve crowd gathering or temporary installations. All excursions, hiking, and outdoor sports are suspended, emphasizing safety during this turbulent weather.
The Purpose of PEIN
The PEIN remains activated as of 5 PM on December 12, with the primary objective of preparing for rapid and effective responses to any emergencies that may arise in Fuerteventura. Regardless of whether individual municipal governments promptly communicate these changes, the alert status necessitates the cessation of all municipal activities.
Safety Recommendations
Authorities are strongly urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution during this period. Access to beaches, promenades, jetties, and coastal areas is discouraged. People are advised to minimize travel and carefully adhere to the instructions provided by emergency services. In case of emergencies, community members are reminded to contact emergency services by dialing 112.
Expected Weather Conditions
Official forecasts indicate that the region will experience very rough seas, with significant wave heights predicting anywhere from 5 to 7 meters, and some waves possibly exceeding 9 meters. Alongside these dangerous sea conditions, persistent rainfall is expected, potentially reaching over 40 liters per square meter within just 12 hours. The island is also bracing for powerful gusts of wind, which could top localized speeds of 70 kilometers per hour.
Staying Informed and Safe
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the unfolding weather conditions and follow the self-protection tips from the General Directorate of Emergencies. Engaging in proactive measures will help ensure safety during this challenging time.
Fuerteventura’s resilience is apparent, and with communal cooperation, the island will weather this storm effectively.
