One of the most beloved cultural events in the Canary Islands, the traditional Baile de Taifas, is set to shift its location this year, bringing new energy to the festivities. Hosted by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, this vibrant celebration will now take place at the fairgrounds in Puerto del Rosario. This change aims to enhance the experience for attendees by providing improved facilities, accommodating more guests, and increasing the number of dining tables available.
According to Lola García, president of the Cabildo, this year’s Baile de Taifas introduces significant innovations. These enhancements are aimed at elevating what is arguably the largest event of May in the archipelago. Not only does the Baile have a high turnout, but it also stands out for its commitment to preserving traditional music and attire, ensuring that the cultural integrity of the celebration remains intact.
The relocation to the Puerto del Rosario fairgrounds is expected to improve accessibility and increase parking options, with an additional 5,000 square meters of space available compared to previous years. This will allow for an expanded dancing area and more seating—from 257 tables to 400—addressing complaints from attendees regarding space and comfort.
The setup of the event will create an immersive atmosphere where everyone can participate in the dance. This change will also be evaluated post-event to determine if the new venue will be retained for future editions. All tables will be organized in a single area, and additional amenities such as food stands and parallel activities—like show cooking featuring Canarian gastronomy, showcases of traditional clothing, and photo opportunities—are planned.
Both García and culture councilor Rayco León have encouraged everyone to join the festivities on May 29 in this revamped setting. They highlighted the collaborative efforts with the Municipality of Puerto del Rosario, which played a crucial role in making this space available and assisting in the organization of the event.
Compliments also flowed from David de Vera, the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, who praised the cultural agenda set forth by the Cabildo during the month of May. This agenda not only showcases the unique attributes of the Canary Islands but also reflects a fruitful partnership between the Cabildo and the municipality to deliver a spectacular Baile de Taifas filled with fresh updates.
Mayo 100% Canarias
In conjunction with the Baile de Taifas, councilor Rayco León unveiled the comprehensive activities planned under the ‘Mayo 100% Canarias’ initiative. This program aims to elevate and promote the customs and traditions of the Canarian people, particularly targeting younger audiences. Full details of this extensive program will soon be available on the official culture website of Fuerteventura.
Rayco León further elaborated that the agenda includes theatrical performances, local authors and literature, heritage site visits, and traditional dance workshops in collaboration with folkloric groups like Maxorata and Tetir. Additionally, an exhibition on traditional clothing will be presented at the Palace of Education and Congresses in Fuerteventura before transitioning to the Gran Tarajal Library. Engaging with students to introduce them to aspects of Canarian identity is also a key component of this program, promising a diverse array of events led by the Department of Culture and supported by various island services like Cultural Heritage and Youth.
