Transforming Sports Facilities in La Oliva: A Community Commitment

The municipality of La Oliva has been on a transformative journey over the past several years, significantly enhancing its sports facilities through an ambitious investment plan. From 2017 to the present, the local government has allocated a robust total of €1.6 million, enabling more than 300 improvement projects across various sporting venues. This initiative is a clear testament to the commitment of local leaders to promote health and well-being among residents.

A Tour of Progress

Recently, a tour conducted by Mayor Isaí Blanco and Sports Councilor Gleiber Carreño showcased some of the latest improvements, focusing on locations like the Jonathan Sesma complex in Corralejo and the shooting range in Lajares. Carreño noted, “The shooting field has commenced construction, and we are delighted, as prior equipment was outdated, especially the new clay pigeon throwing machines that users have eagerly anticipated.”

Acknowledging Community Health

Mayor Blanco expressed satisfaction regarding the evolution of municipal sports facilities. He extended gratitude to both Carreño and the entire Sports Department staff for their commitment over three years. Their concerted efforts have rejuvenated local facilities, from significant investments like the Vicente Carreño Stadium to the refurbishment of small village courts. This work significantly benefits the community’s physical health, as it grants residents of all ages opportunities to engage in sport.

Budgeting for Excellence

The investment planning for 2020 has already exceeded €300,000 and includes crucial projects such as the complete renovation of the shooting range in Lajares, budgeting €70,000. Additional allocations consist of €35,000 for the El Cotillo football field, €27,000 for improvements to the José Perdomo Umpiérrez Pavilion in Corralejo, and €26,000 for purchasing new sports equipment.

In the Jonathan Sesma facilities in Corralejo, €18,000 has been dedicated to improving the Football 7 pitch, while €41,000 is being used for enhancements to two outdoor sports courts equipped for both football and basketball.

Modernization Efforts

In a significant boost to local sports venues, improvements have been made to various outdoor courts across different towns. The La Capellanía court has begun renovation work with an investment of €10,000. Lajares is also receiving attention, with €22,000 earmarked for illuminating the “bola canaria” court and renewing the multipurpose sports court.

The Vicente Carreño Football Field has witnessed a comprehensive overhaul in recent years. After the artificial turf renewal in 2018, which cost €200,000, investments continued with the refurbishment of locker rooms and bleachers at €80,000 last year; this year, €50,000 is allocated for LED lighting and irrigation systems.

Broadening Access to Facilities

This Investment Plan for Sports Infrastructure has evolved since 2017, impacting all municipal sports facilities. These advancements have transformed the quality of local sports venues by upgrading amenities such as locker rooms, irrigation systems, and energy solutions like solar thermal power, enhancing safety with new lighting across communal spaces, including football fields in Corralejo, Lajares, El Cotillo, Villaverde, and La Oliva.

Improvements have also been made at the Nautical School of Corralejo, where new sporting equipment is now available for maritime activities, along with gym upgrades. The Corralejo Swimming Pool, which had been closed for renovations since 2017, has reopened after a €60,000 investment for the rehabilitation of both the pool basin and machinery room, similar to upgrades seen at La Oliva Pool, particularly in wood treatment improvements.

Enhancing Multi-sport Venues

The revitalization of multipurpose courts has been a significant achievement, especially at the Plaza de La Oliva and various others, with full renovations that now feature sun shelters and futtoc tables. Other courts in Los Jameos, Villaverde, El Cotillo, Lajares, and La Capellanía are also undergoing improvements.

Moreover, the Municipal Wrestling Terrero in Lajares has received essential structural upgrades, including expanded seating and various other accessibility features, enhancements to fire prevention systems, and new gym equipment.

Supporting Alternative Sports

The Department of Sports has also placed emphasis on skating, investing over €30,000 in both the court and stands of the Skate Park in Parque Holandés, alongside a similar investment for the new bowl at the Skate Park in Corralejo. This commitment highlights the municipality’s dedication not only to traditional sports but to a wide range of recreational activities that cater to diverse interests within the community.

With all these advancements, Canarias Noticias is reaching out to the community for support.
