The Cabildo Renovates the Walkways of Saladar de Jandía in Morro Jable

Rehabilitation Works Begin at Playa del Matorral

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has officially commenced rehabilitation works on the walkways at the scientifically significant site of Playa del Matorral, commonly referred to as Saladar de Jandía, located in the municipality of Pájara. This decision marks an essential step toward preserving one of the island’s most treasured natural spots.

Temporary Access Changes

As the rehabilitation work unfolds, the environmental department led by Carlos Rodríguez has communicated that access to the beach will now be via the dirt path adjacent to the walkways. This temporary adjustment is part of a broader effort to ensure both visitor safety and protection of the local environment during the rehabilitation process.

Addressing Deterioration

This renowned natural area has been significantly affected by the forces of the sea and the passage of time. Over the years, several sections of the walkways have deteriorated substantially due to natural erosion and acts of vandalism, exacerbated by continuous foot traffic from tourists and locals alike. By initiating this rehabilitation, the Insular Corporation aims to restore secure access and enhance the ecological integrity of this unique environment.

The Details of the Project

With a budget nearing 30,000 euros and an execution timeline of three months, the outlined works will involve several key actions:

  • Marking and Securing the Work Area: The area will be properly cordoned off to ensure safety for both the public and work crews.
  • Information Signage: Clear signage will be installed to inform visitors about the ongoing construction and any safety precautions.
  • Removal of Damaged Sections: The current project entails dismantling sections of the walkways and railings that are deemed unsafe.
  • Proper Disposal: All removed materials will be transported to an authorized landfill.

Furthermore, the project will involve the replacement of removed walkway sections and railings. This process includes proper measuring, cutting, and assembling of the new components. The final touches will ensure that the area is left clean and restore its appealing visual aspects to both residents and visitors.

A Commitment to Safety and Conservation

“The importance of these works cannot be overstated,” emphasized the President of the Cabildo, Lola García. She highlighted the necessity of maintaining infrastructure that allows visitors to enjoy this exceptional natural environment safely while also protecting its ecological and scientific value.

Carlos Rodríguez, the Environment Minister, acknowledged the potential inconveniences these rehabilitation efforts might cause. “We sincerely apologize for any disruptions during the works, but they are essential for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all visitors. We appreciate the community’s understanding as we strive to improve and protect this invaluable natural setting,” he stated.

Looking Ahead

The rehabilitation of the walkways at Playa del Matorral is not just a construction project; it represents a deeper commitment to sustainability, safety, and the preservation of the island’s ecological heritage. The careful planning and execution of this initiative will ensure that both the natural beauty and scientific importance of this unique area are maintained for generations to come.
