ABB’s 2026 Startup Challenge: Pioneering AI-Powered Innovations for a Sustainable Future

ABB has recently unveiled the winners of its 2026 Startup Challenge, a program dedicated to spotlighting groundbreaking AI-powered technologies aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, resilience, and sustainability across various sectors. This initiative, now in its seventh year, serves as a platform for startups worldwide to collaborate with ABB experts, addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the energy transition.

The Challenge: Addressing Energy Transition Needs

The Startup Challenge aims to tackle a range of critical issues, including the transformation of smart homes, the reinvention of circuit breaker technology, advancements in DC power grids, and the development of industrial planning tools to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Startups are encouraged to innovate solutions that optimize electrical motors and drives, as well as enhance system engineering and integration across industrial systems. This year, ABB received over 200 applications from 39 countries, ultimately selecting 18 finalists to compete at the Energy Tech Summit in Bilbao, Spain.

Meet the Winning Startups

The six winning startups, each awarded $30,000 in collaboration funding, will work with ABB to develop a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) over the next six months. Here’s a closer look at these innovative companies:

  1. Sesame Sustainability (U.S.)

    • Innovation: The Meridian platform helps industrial firms accelerate carbon emission reductions. By replacing traditional audits with rapid facility analyses, it identifies cost-effective decarbonization strategies, including electrification and microgrid opportunities. This enables ABB’s Navigate advisors to swiftly transition from uncertainty to actionable investment.
  2. MorphoAI (NYC and London)

    • Innovation: This startup automates circuit breaker design, reducing design time from months to hours. Engineers input specifications, and the software generates and tests numerous designs, ready for manufacturing. This innovation minimizes design errors and expedites market readiness.
  3. Bisly (Estonia)

    • Innovation: Bisly has created a digital twin-based platform for building automation, streamlining engineering and commissioning processes. This approach reduces manual labor, cuts costs by up to 35%, and minimizes installation errors, making advanced automation more accessible.
  4. eRoots Analytics (Barcelona)

    • Innovation: This company automates the creation of digital twins for power electronics converters, significantly reducing the time required for model creation. Their software produces highly accurate simulation models, enhancing testing and validation processes amidst increasing regulatory demands.
  5. Forgis (Europe)

    • Innovation: Forgis offers an AI platform that bridges engineering and operations in factories. By automating traditionally specialist tasks, it enhances efficiency and supports industrial resilience, enabling manufacturers to compete on intelligence rather than labor costs.
  6. Faraday Predictive (Cambridge)

    • Innovation: Utilizing a sensorless, physics-based technology, Faraday Predictive monitors motor systems for predictive maintenance without additional hardware. By integrating their algorithms into ABB drives, they provide early failure warnings, facilitating proactive maintenance.

Real-World Application and Support

Each winning startup will pilot their solutions with ABB customers to validate their performance in real-world settings, accelerating the path to commercialization. The winners will also gain access to ABB’s extensive network of experts, shared lab environments, and customer ecosystems. Additionally, they are eligible for up to $150,000 in Microsoft Azure credits and mentorship from Microsoft advisors and SynerLeap, ABB’s open innovation platform.

The Power of Collaboration

Massimo Muzzi, Head of Strategy, Business Development & Sustainability for ABB’s Electrification business, emphasized the importance of collaboration in fostering innovation. “Innovation doesn’t happen in isolation,” he stated. The Startup Challenge exemplifies how working closely with startups can transform new ideas into practical solutions that address real-world challenges, particularly in the energy sector.

A Commitment to Innovation

Since its inception in 2020, the Startup Challenge has become a vital platform for co-developing solutions that drive innovation in the energy industry. ABB has invested $23 million in startups through this program, resulting in the development of 35 MVPs and the launch of eight solutions to market. Over 20 startups have progressed beyond the MVP stage, with seven securing venture investment, showcasing the program’s effectiveness in scaling promising technologies.
