Tragic Incident at Valle de Santa Inés Beach

A shocking event unfolded on Thursday, January 30, 2026, at Valle de Santa Inés beach, located in the picturesque Aguas Verdes area of Betancuria, Fuerteventura. A severe emergency response was mobilized following a report of a woman in distress in the ocean.

The caller to the Centro Coordinador de Emergencias y Seguridad 112 (Emergency Coordinator Center) reported that several beachgoers had managed to pull a 44-year-old foreign woman from the water, who was unconscious after apparently falling from nearby rocks. This alarming situation prompted immediate action, emphasizing the importance of quick responses in emergency scenarios.

At 14:42 hours, the 112 center swiftly initiated the deployment of emergency services, which included a fully equipped ambulance, another for basic life support from the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (Canary Emergency Service), a helicopter from the Grupo de Emergencias y Salvamento (GES), and support from the Servicio de Prevención, Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento (Fire Prevention, Extinction, and Rescue Service) of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, along with local police and the Guardia Civil.

As emergency teams were en route, brave beachgoers promptly began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the woman. Their decisive actions highlighted the crucial role of bystanders in emergency situations where every second counts. Once the GES helicopter arrived, its rescue team took over the resuscitation efforts right on the beach, demonstrating the urgency and gravity of the incident.

Upon the arrival of the SUC medical personnel, they assessed that the woman was in a state of cardiac arrest. Despite advanced life-saving measures being implemented, sadly, they could not revive her. The team ultimately confirmed her passing, a tragic conclusion to what had begun as a seemingly innocent day at the beach.

This unfortunate occurrence serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with water activities and the paramount importance of safety measures while enjoying the ocean.

Engagement from local authorities, educational campaigns around water safety, and improvements in emergency response are critical to help prevent such tragedies in the future and ensure that emergency protocols are well-practiced and efficient for life-saving situations.
