Celebration of the Day of the Canaries in Antigua

On Thursday, May 30th, the charming plaza of Antigua will come alive with the vibrant celebration of the Day of the Canaries. Organized by the Cultural Department of the Antigua Town Hall, this year’s festivities promise a delightful fusion of traditional music, delicious cuisine, and communal joy, all centered around a lively Baile de Taifas.

A Feast for the Senses

The celebration features a grand setup with around thirty tables awaiting locals and visitors alike. Over 15 musical groups, associations, and parrandas will bring the plaza to life, creating an inviting atmosphere filled with laughter and song. Attendees can indulge in an array of traditional Canarian fare, including pucheros, pescaos, and the beloved papas. Meat lovers can savor dishes like carne de cabra, while those seeking comfort food will find garbanzada among the enticing options.

The culinary experience wouldn’t be complete without refreshing drinks to accompany the feast. Mayor Matías Peña emphasizes that the best way to celebrate the Day of the Canaries is “among friends and family, with music and folklore dances that invite everyone to join the fun.”

A Showcase of Local Talent

The invitation from Councilor Jonathan Peña encourages all residents to attend, ideally dressed in traditional Canarian attire. The festivities begin at midday and continue until 6 PM, featuring performances from renowned musical groups like Vitolo from Gran Canaria, La Tafeña, Monte Janana, El Campillo, and La Serená, along with the local senior citizens’ association.

The atmosphere will surely be electric as these talented ensembles fill the air with the rhythms of traditional Canarian music. The dances associated with these performances not only entertain but also foster a sense of community and belonging among citizens.

Family-Friendly Activities

To ensure that the celebration caters to all age groups, the plaza will also feature inflatable castles for children, providing hours of fun. In addition to the musical performances, there will be workshops, traditional games, and a dedicated space for children to engage in educational activities. The aim is to enrich the experience with opportunities for families to bond over crafts and games that reflect Canarian heritage, such as chascona and perro y palomas.

These rich, interactive experiences will encourage the younger generation to appreciate their cultural roots while having a great time. Parents can watch their children play and learn, all while enjoying the festivities.

An Invitation to Celebrate Together

As neighbors gather for this significant occasion, the Day of the Canaries in Antigua stands out as a splendid opportunity for shared celebration, unity, and cultural pride. With an emphasis on traditional values, music, and culinary delights, this event is poised to be one of the highlights of the local calendar. The embrace of both the old and new creates a unique atmosphere where childhood memories and cultural expressions intertwine, ensuring that everyone leaves with a sense of joy and belonging.
