A Hot Sunday in the Canary Islands
This Sunday, the Canary Islands are bracing for a significant heat wave, as predicted by the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET). With mostly clear skies and the possibility of light calima at higher altitudes, residents and visitors should prepare for warm temperatures across the archipelago.
Rising Temperatures in the Interior
The weather forecast suggests a day that will be largely clear or with few clouds, although the northern parts of the islands may see some cloud cover during the early mornings and late afternoons. Temperatures are expected to rise gently, with a more substantial increase in the interior regions of the mountainous islands. Many areas could reach highs around 30 degrees Celsius, with exceptions for La Palma and El Hierro, where cooler temperatures may prevail.
Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura
In Gran Canaria, the most notable temperature spikes are expected in the southeastern, southern, and western foothills. Here, highs could hover around 34 to 35 degrees Celsius, especially in the Tejeda basin.
Similarly, Fuerteventura will experience a rise in temperature, particularly in southern interior areas where highs might reach 34 degrees Celsius. The capital, Puerto del Rosario, is forecasted to see a minimum of 22 degrees and a maximum of 30 degrees throughout the day.
Weather in Lanzarote and Tenerife
Moving to Lanzarote, the skies are expected to remain predominantly clear, although there may be some cloud cover along the northern and western coasts during the early and late hours. In the south and east, temperatures could peak between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius. Specifically, in Arrecife, the forecast indicates a low of 22 degrees and a high of 31 degrees.
On the island of Tenerife, similar conditions are anticipated, with predominantly clear skies and low clouds in the north during the beginning and end of the day. By afternoon, the calima could become more prominent, pushing temperatures above 30 degrees in the eastern, southern, and western foothills.
Conditions in La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro
In La Gomera, temperatures are set to rise modestly, particularly in the foothills and higher regions, where highs will again exceed 30 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, La Palma will experience a similar warming trend. Highs in the interior areas may reach 30 degrees in the western foothills, promoting a very summer-like atmosphere.
El Hierro will see minimal changes in coastal temperatures, but an increase is expected inland and in high-altitude zones, offering a mix of mountain coolness and pleasant warmth.
Wind and Sea Conditions
The wind will predominantly blow from the northern direction, with moderate conditions expected. However, stronger gusts are anticipated at night in places like Jandía and on the eastern and western coasts of the mountainous islands.
Maritime conditions will reflect the wind patterns, featuring north to northwest winds and moderate waves, generally increasing throughout the day. A swell from the north is also expected, measuring around one meter, tapering off as the day progresses.
