Exploring Calderón Hondo: A Volcanic Adventure in Fuerteventura

I woke up one sunny morning with an adventurous spirit, eager to tackle a volcano. While Fuerteventura’s volcanic landscape might not rival the dramatic peaks of nearby Lanzarote or Tenerife, the silhouette of Calderón Hondo visible from our apartment in Corralejo was too captivating to resist.

Getting Started at Lajares

I set out early, around 6:30 AM, as August’s scorching sun had been relentless. A brief drive brought me to the quaint village of Lajares, where the trail to Calderón Hondo begins. In less than thirty minutes, I arrived at the village outskirts, where a marked path leads directly to the volcano.

As I navigated the northern region of Fuerteventura, the road revealed a striking line of volcanoes. These majestic formations, born from eruptions over 20,000 years ago, contributed to the creation of Lobos Island and the expansion of Fuerteventura itself. Calderón Hondo, with its crater plunging over 70 meters deep, invites exploration.

The path is easy to spot from the main road, marked by a large, informative map illustrating the area. Following the well-trodden path, I embarked on a modest circular hike of about five kilometers, with a gentle ascent of approximately 160 meters.

Hiking the Trail

The route began by skirting the first mountains, gradually climbing without steep elevation changes. As I approached the western edge of Calderón Hondo, my surroundings became increasingly panoramic, revealing splendid views over Corralejo, the northern region of Fuerteventura, and the island’s stunning coastline.

A final, steeper ascent of around 200 meters led me to the summit, where a lookout point awaited. The crater lay beneath me, a reminder of the earth’s tumultuous past. Despite reading reports about playful squirrels in the area, I saw none during my visit—perhaps they were on summer vacation or cautious of the warm sun.

At the apex of my journey, I found myself at one of the highest points in northern Fuerteventura. Here, the views unfolded dramatically—other volcanoes dotted the landscape, evoking a lunar-like panorama. Human presence seemed minimal, allowing nature’s beauty to dominate the horizon, where even the shadow of Lanzarote loomed nearby.

Accompanying Wildlife and Safety

Around the edge of the crater, I carefully maneuvered, taking note of the gusts of wind. A few raptors circled above, their sharp eyes scanning for prey. The volcanic environment held a unique charm, contrasting sharply with the more tourist-centric destinations typically found on the islands.

Completing a circuit around the crater was straightforward, though caution was necessary, especially when winds picked up. The terrain was forgiving, enabling most to experience the thrill of standing at a volcanic summit.

After a full 180-degree journey around the volcano, I discovered another trail that descended towards the valley between Calderón Hondo and a neighboring peak. This led me to a broad path that easily facilitated my return to the starting point.

A Unique Fuerteventura Experience

This hike is an excellent alternative for visitors seeking a break from Fuerteventura’s beaches. I completed most of the journey at a jog, enjoying the easy trails and mild elevation changes. As a precaution, after reaching the lookout, travelers should assess their readiness for a circular walk around the crater based on personal comfort with heights.
