In a quest for equitable distribution of resources, Cerdeña disaffiliated from the Coalición Canaria and formed Unidos Por Betancuria. This political move has led to a more favorable allocation of the REF funds, which now contribute around 400,000 euros—representing 13.33% of the anticipated 2024 budget. This financial backing is essential for ongoing and future projects, including acquiring land for public housing aimed at addressing local housing shortages.

Despite considerable progress, Cerdeña acknowledged the challenge of securing grants necessary for the municipality’s development. He highlighted the difficulties faced in obtaining funding from the Canarian Housing Institute, noting the loss of 60,000 euros in potential subsidies due to stringent deadlines and complex application processes. For many community members, the requirement to front a portion of the funding poses a significant hurdle, leading to missed opportunities.
The mayor also discussed the complications surrounding a 40,000 euro accessibility grant that was forfeited due to short timelines and issues with project bidding. These challenges hinder effective implementation and can result in lost financial support for critical community projects.
