A Strategic Project for the First Historical Capital of the Canary Islands
The historic municipality of Betancuria, recognized as one of Spain’s Most Beautiful Villages, is gearing up for an exciting new venture. The local council has announced plans for the construction of a new commercial and public infrastructure that intends to invigorate both the economy and social fabric of the village. This proposal was unveiled during a meeting held on Tuesday, June 16, at the Casa del Zapatero, where local leaders presented the project directly to business stakeholders, gathering their input and concerns.
Business Community Engagement
During the meeting, several key concerns were raised by local entrepreneurs. One of the primary issues discussed was the need for enhanced public transportation connectivity to aid in employee recruitment. Business owners expressed a desire to see local chefs showcased at island-wide and national food fairs, emphasizing the importance of promoting local talent. Additionally, there were calls for strategies that seamlessly balance the quality of life for residents with the experience of visiting tourists.
Enrique Cerdeña, the Mayor of Betancuria, highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, stating, “Betancuria has the pride of being the first historical capital of the Canaries. With this project, we demonstrate that protecting our history is entirely compatible with leading Fuerteventura’s ecological transition. Through this cutting-edge three-story structure, we achieve a threefold objective agreed upon with our business community: promoting traditional commerce at the base, tackling parking issues in the town center, and creating a plaza with a café at the top that serves as a lively meeting point for the community.”
Utilizing Urban Elevation for Functional Spaces
The proposed structure will be located on the plot between Roberto Roldán and Hermanos Martín Fajardo streets, a site that previously hosted the 3rd International Sculpture Symposium. The architectural design intends to take full advantage of the natural elevation between the two roads, organizing distinct uses across the three levels. This thoughtful approach aims to address several long-standing needs within the municipality.
